Marlene VerPlanck (born November 11, 1933 as Marlene Pampinella in Newark , New Jersey ; † January 14, 2018 ) was an American jazz singer .

Marlene VerPlanck, widow of arranger and band leader Billy VerPlanck , who died in 2009 , grew up in Newark. Frank Sinatra was an early role model . She began her career as a singer at the age of 19 when she was a band vocalist in the orchestras of Tex Beneke and Charlie Spivak . In 1955 she worked with Hank Jones , Herbie Mann , Joe Wilder , Wendell Marshall and Kenny Clarke , with whom she recorded her album I Think of You with Every Breath I Take for Savoy Records . She met Billy VerPlanck at Spivak; the two then moved together to the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra . After Tommy Dorsey's death in 1956, the VerPlancks stayed in New York City to work as studio musicians for Frank Sinatra, Perry Como , Tony Bennett , Antônio Carlos Jobim , and later for Blood, Sweat & Tears and the band Kiss . In the 1960s, it became popular in the United States primarily through promotional jingles for cigarettes, canned soups, and beer.

In later years the couple moved to Clifton to work on their own projects; the first album together was A Breath of Fresh Air in 1968 . In 1976 she worked with composer / pianist Loonis McGlohon , with whom she appeared on Alec Wilder's radio show American Popular Song . Then the album Marlene VerPlanck Sings Alec Wilder was created . After Wilder's death, she appeared on the radio show The American Popular Singers , hosted by McGlohon and Eileen Farrell. VerPlanck also appeared in New York City at Carnegie Hall and the Rainbow Room , in clubs such as Michael's Pub , but also on various television shows such as The Today Show . Her album My Impetuous Heart (2000) she recorded with Hank Jones, George Shearing , Marian McPartland and Bucky Pizzarelli .
