In the following year he recorded with Donald Byrd , also from Detroit, and played with bassist Alvin Jackson in 1955/56 (the brother of Milt Jackson , with whom he played in Detroit on weekends at the Bluebird Inn), with Pepper Adams in 1957 and Yusef Lateef in 1958. McKinney went to New York with Lateef in 1959 and worked with Illinois Jacquet in 1959, the Octet of Slide Hampton 1959-61, Benny Golsons Jazztet 1960 and the Sun Ra Arkestra 1961. In 1962 he played with Freddie Hubbard his blue-note record Ready For Freddie .

After working with Hubbard, he changed his name to "Kiane Zawadi" in 1965. Under his new name he also played with Hubbard's albums Blue Spirits , 1966 and High Blues Pressure , 1968. McKinney / Zawadi continued his musical career in Broadway orchestras (e.g. in the Revue Dancin ' in 1978 ) and in various big bands , e.g. with Frank Foster in 1978, Sun Ra , Clifford Jordan in the early 1990s, Bill Hardman ( Brass Co. , 1971 ), Joe Henderson 1992. In the 1970s he also recorded with free jazz musicians such as Archie Shepp ( Attica Blues , 1972) and McCoy Tyner , as well as with Abdullah Ibrahim . He recorded with members of his family in the 1990s under the band name McKinfolk .
