Bob Blumenthal
Bob Blumenthal (* in St. Louis ) is an American jazz journalist.
Blumenthal grew up in Clayton. He has been writing jazz reviews since 1969 (at that time still in college), first for the Boston Phoenix (then "Boston after Dark"), for which he wrote until 1989, then u. a. for Down Beat , Village Voice , Jazz Times, Rolling Stone and The Atlantic Monthly . He was a columnist for the Boston Globe from 1993 to 2002 , for which he has been a regular contributor since 1990 (and previously as a guest critic). He was also an attorney at the Massachusetts Department of Education . He has received several awards from the Jazz Journalists Association, including a. a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005. One of six nominees for the Recording Industry Association of America, he selected the records for the White House Music Library during the presidency of Jimmy Carter . From 2002 he was a consultant for the label "Marsalis Music" from Branford Marsalis .
He received several Grammies for his liner notes (1999 for "John Coltrane - The Classic Quartet / Complete Impulse! Studio Recordings" and 2000 for "Miles Davis and John Coltrane: Complete Columbia Recordings 1955-1961").
He should not be confused with the jazz drummer Robert Blumenthal (1949-2008).
