Henry Lowther

Henry Lowther (* 11. July 1941 in Leicester ) is a British jazz - trumpet player , violinist and pianist .

Live and act

Lowther comes from a brass family on both his mother's and father's side and had cornet lessons from his father. He later studied violin at the Royal Academy of Music in London , but is self-taught as a jazz musician . During the 1960s he led his own formations and played with Jack Bruce and Jon Hiseman . He also worked with Mike Westbrook , the New Jazz Orchestra , and with rock and blues bands such as John Mayall , Manfred Mann and the Keef Hartley Band . In the 1970s he played with leading musicians on the English jazz scene such as Michael Gibbs , Kenny Wheeler , Tony Coe , Norma Winstone , Michael Garrick , Keith Tippett and John Dankworth . In the 1980s he led his own bands again and worked with John Surman , Gordon Beck , John Taylor , Gil Evans and the London Brass Virtuosi . In the 1990s he took part in numerous big band productions, such as the Berlin Contemporary Jazz Orchestra , Kenny Wheeler ("Music for Large and Small Ensembles", 1990), the London Jazz Composers Orchestra from 1987 to 1996, the "Brass Project" by John Surman and John Warren 1992, Colin Towns , Don Weller (1996), Stan Tracey and George Russell's Living Time Orchestra . In the early 1990s he was a member of the Dedication Orchestra . In 2000 he played with Frank Griffith Nonet at the Ealing Jazz Festival . He was a member of the BBC Radio Orchestra for several years and continued to work with Django Bates , Sam Rivers and Billy Cobham .
