Parliamentary Jazz Awards

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Parliamentary Jazz Awards are a British jazz prize that has been presented annually since 2005.

Goal and organization

The awards ceremony is organized by the All Party Parliamentary Jazz Appreciation Group (APPJAG) at the Palace of Westminster in London . The group consists of over eighty members of the House of Commons and the House of Lords . They are representatives of all UK parties represented in Parliament. The aim of the organization is to promote a broader and deeper enjoyment of jazz, to strengthen parliamentarians' understanding of the jazz industry, to promote jazz as a form of music and to make it known inside and outside parliament.

The award ceremony was initiated by Bob Blizzard , then a member of the House of Commons for the Waveney district in Suffolk , England . Blizzard was a longtime jazz enthusiast who worried that jazz was not getting enough national recognition and that jazz artists and jazz venues in the UK were getting too little attention.

The APPJAG award ceremony is supported by the service organization JazzUK (formerly Jazz Services), the monthly magazine Jazzwise , the jazz section of the Musicians' Union of the United Kingdom and the media company Phonographic Performance Limited (PPL).
