Phil Robson

Phil Robson (born February 28, 1970 in Derby ) is a British jazz musician ( guitar , composition ) of modern jazz .

Live and act

Robson, who grew up in Derby, learned to play the guitar from the age of ten; his father is a semi-professional clarinetist. As a teenager he accompanied guest musicians such as John Etheridge and Bheki Mseleku in the local jazz club , as well as his father Trevor Robson. At the age of 18 he moved to London, where he studied jazz at the Guildhall School of Music . In the 1990s he was a member of the British National Youth Jazz Orchestra , with which he made his first recordings between 1991 and 1993. He then worked in the British and international jazz scene with musicians such as Christine Tobin , Andrea Vicari, Ken Stubbs , Claire Martin , Liam Noble , Alec Dankworth , Hans Koller as well as with Billy Hart , James Genus , Donny McCaslin and David Liebman . As an accompanist, he continued to work for Charles Earland , Kenny Wheeler , Bob Brookmeyer , Steve Lacy and Barbra Streisand . For twenty years he and Julian Siegel led the Partisans formation , which released five albums.

Robson's debut album Impish was released by Babel in 2002, followed by Screenwash (2004), with original compositions, but also cover versions of John Lennon's " Jealous Guy " or Jerome Kern's " Yesterdays ". In 2011 Robson recorded the album The Immeasurable Code (Whirlwind) under his own name , on which Gareth Lockrane , Mark Turner , Michael Janisch and Ernesto Simpson (drums) played. He has lived in New York since 2015; Currently (2019) he leads his own quartet, but also belongs to Peter Leitch's New Life Orchestra and the Jed Levy Quartet. In the field of jazz, he was involved in 42 recording sessions between 1984 and 2015, most recently with Jeff Williams . At the Parliamentary Jazz Awards 2009 he was the winner in the jazz musician of the year category .
