Gareth John Lockrane (born January 30, 1976 in Stoke-on-Trent ) is a British jazz musician ( flute , piccolo , alto flute, bass flute, occasionally piano, composition and arrangement).

Live and act

Lockrane began playing the flute at the age of ten; At the age of 14 he found jazz through his father's record collection. His main influences on the flute are Frank Wess , Joe Farrell , James Clay , Roland Kirk , Paul Horn , Hubert Laws and James Moody . In 1994 he enrolled in the jazz course at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied with Stan Sulzmann , Hugh Fraser and Eddie Parker . He worked with fellow students such as Tom Cawley, Osian Roberts and Orlando le Fleming. In 1998 he studied in New York with Joe Lovano , Dick Oatts and Jim McNeely . From 2006 to 2008 he completed a master's degree in film composing at the National Film & Television School .

In 2002 he founded the band Grooveyard with saxophonist Alex Garnett , which released the album Put the Cat and toured internationally in 2005. The Struth album followed in 2012 with this line-up . With his septet, to which the winds Robbie Robson, Steve Kaldestad, Trevor Mires and in the rhythm section Robin Aspland , Matt Miles and Matt Home belong, he presented the album No Messin . He also presented his big band for the first time at the London Jazz Festival 2008, which also performed successfully at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club and released the album Fistfight at the Barndance .

He also appeared with Bheki Mseleku and in Phil Robson's IMS Quintet (with Mark Turner ), but also with Jack DeJohnette , Cheryl Bailey, Georgia Mancio , Kate Williams , Claudio Passavanti, Hans Koller , Laurence Cottle, Anita Wardell and Gwilym Simcock . He can also be heard on albums by Christine Tobin , Phil Donkin , Incognito , Paul Booth , Natalie Williams, Simon Woolf and the James Taylor Quartet .

From 2010 he headed the jazz department of the Junior Academy at the Royal Academy of Music . He also wrote the music for the film China's Wild West .

Prizes and awards

Lockrane was with the band The Jazz System 1997 finalist in the competition of the Jazz Fest Wien ; In 2000 he was a finalist in the competition for the Young Jazz Musician of the Year . In 2010 his album No Messin received a Parliamentary Jazz Award as "Jazz Album of the Year" . He was also listed on the flutist list as a “rising star” in the Down Beat critics poll .
