Paul Horn (musician)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Paul Horn (born March 17, 1930 in New York City , † June 29, 2014 in Vancouver ) was an American jazz musician whose main instruments were the flute and (occasionally) the soprano saxophone . At first he also played the clarinet and alto saxophone . He is considered to be one of the founders of meditative New Age music.

Live and act

Horn studied music in Oberlin until 1952 and then completed his Masters at the Manhattan School of Music . In 1956 he became a member of the Sauter-Finegan Orchestra ; from 1956 to 1958 he was a member of Chico Hamilton's quintet , with which he became known. In Los Angeles he then led his own group and worked as a studio musician. He can be heard on recordings by Duke Ellington , Gil Evans / Miles Davis ( The Time of the Barracudas 1963), Frank Sinatra , Lalo Schifrin and Nat King Cole . From 1957 he released recordings as a band leader and later as a soloist.

His first major musical successes he celebrated in 1966 with the award of the Grammy for his interpretation of jazz exhibition of Lalo Schifrin , "Jazz Suite on the Mass texts" . The pressure to succeed drove him into an artistic dead end; he increasingly suffered from drug problems. He sought and found a way out during a stay in the ashram of the then very popular Guru Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in Rishikesh , Northern India. With the help of the yoga practices he had learned, he reorganized his life. He ended his four-month stay in India with a spontaneous recording at the Taj Mahal , which he recorded for private purposes. For this purpose, he sat down alone in the central room after the evening had closed and sent sound structures into the room with his flute. He then used the resulting echo to design the other sound images. Originally intended for private use, the recordings were later released under the title "Inside Taj Mahal" and not only became a great commercial success. The album is now seen as the impetus for the subsequent development of New Age music.

After his return from India, Horn also worked as a yoga teacher and moved to Victoria (British Columbia) . He subsequently recorded other albums in the Inside series, which were essentially created using the same method, playing with the echo of buildings. In addition to these recordings, he has produced other jazz and world music records, for example with Egberto Gismonti and with Nexus . Since 1973 he also had his own television show in Canada. In the late 1970s he visited China several times; In 1983 he toured the former Soviet Union with David Friesen .

In 2009 Horn performed at the David Lynch Foundation for Consciousness-Based Education and World Peace charity concert "Change Begins Within" at Radio City Music Hall, New York City; There were also Paul McCartney , Ringo Starr , Donovan , Ben Harper , Sheryl Crow , Eddie Vedder and Moby .

Paul Horn died after a brief illness on June 29, 2014 at the age of 84 in his home in Vancouver, Canada.
