Robin Michael Aspland (born December 6, 1961 in Leeds ) is a British jazz pianist and keyboardist ( Fender Rhodes , Hammond B3 , Clavinet , etc.) who occasionally plays drums .

Life

Aspland, who became a choirboy at the age of seven, received musical training at Roundhay High School in Leeds and then studied jazz at the Colchester Institute . After performing with various groups in the area, he moved to London in 1984. The following year he became a member of the Pasadena Roof Orchestra . In the 1990s he made a name for himself accompanying musicians such as Iain Ballamy , George Coleman , John Dankworth & Cleo Laine , Pete King , Dick Morrissey , Orphy Robinson , Arturo Sandoval , Ronnie Scott , Bobby Watson and Kenny Wheeler . He was part of Van Morrison's band for six years . In the following decade he built his reputation as the accompanist to singers like Tina May , Liz Fletcher, Karen Lane, Claire Martin , Curtis Stigers , Anita Wardell , and Jane Horrocks ( The Further Adventures Of Little Voice ).

He was also part of Roger Beaujolais' quartet and has performed with Alec Dankworth , Jim Mullen , Dave O'Higgins , Ray Russell , Art Subjects , Nigel Hancock, Ed Motta, and Kate Williams . Aspland not only contributed to the soundtrack of The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), but was also seen in a supporting role. He can also be heard on albums by Tim Garland , Georgie Fame , Billy Jenkins , Sktech , Mose Allison , Adam Glasser , Karen Sharp , Alan Barnes and Joe Mudele .
