Orphy Robinson (born October 13, 1960 in London ) is a British jazz musician ( vibraphone , marimba , percussion , composition ). He draws eclecticism from a wide variety of sources, from jazz and classical to funk .

Live and act

Robinson performed with the Hackney and Islington Youth Band at the age of fourteen and began learning the vibraphone under the influence of Roy Ayers . He played in the funk band Savannah and approached jazz through Claude Deppa . In the mid-1980s, Courtney Pine brought him to his quartet and to the big band Jazz Warriors . He also performed with Andy Sheppard and founded his own band; In 1990 he received a contract from Blue Note Records for the band Annavas Project , which he led with Joe Bashorum and with whom he also performed at the Montreal Jazz Festivaloccurred. He also toured with Hugh Hopper and recorded with Working Week ( Fire on the Mountain , 1989). He later also worked for Jazz Jamaica ( Massive , 2003).

As a composer he worked for ballet ensembles such as Phoenix Dance as well as for Alexander Bălănescu . He also worked as a film composer . He also played with musicians such as Monday Michiru , Don Cherry , Robert Wyatt , Lester Bowie , Wynton Marsalis , Lol Coxhill , Butch Morris , Kate Havnevik , Nigel Kennedy or Neneh Cherry , in 2019 in a duo with Mark Mondesir . He is also a longstanding member of the London Improvisers Orchestra .

For his work in jazz education, he was nominated for Jazz Educator of the Year at the Parliamentary Jazz Awards in 2009.
