Kate Havnevik (* 27. October 1975 in Oslo ) is a Norwegian indie rock - singer-songwriter and composer . Kate performed stage appearances and collaborations with other musicians under the pseudonym Kate Kobro , the name of her great-grandmother.

Life

Kate Havnevik's mother is Norwegian and her father is from England. Both are classically trained musicians and play the flute, as does Kate, along with other instruments, piano, guitar and melodica . Havnevik wanted to work as a classical and jazz musician from an early age . At the age of 14, she already appeared as a member of a punk band consisting of female members in Blitz , an illegally occupied club and center of the punk movement in Oslo.

In 1994 Havnevik decided to travel to England and studied music and composition in Liverpool before moving to London .

To improve her musical compositions, Kate Havnevik sought contact with well-known producers, namely Guy Sigsworth from Frou Frou , who had also worked with Imogen Heap , Madonna , Jem , Britney Spears and Björk . Havnevik first contacted Sigsworth in 2001 and left messages until he agreed to meet. Together they wrote some songs, some of which were published on Melankton .

Their debut album Melankton , which was made with stylistic elements from trip-hop and electronica , was released in March 2006. The album title is borrowed from a character from a Norwegian book and can also be translated as "Black Rose". Two of their songs were covered by the English electronic pop band Temposhark .

Kate publishes her albums on her own label "Continentica Records".

Collaboration with other artists

Kate Havnevik composed parts of the music for the Icelandic adaptation “Love is in the Air” of Romeo and Juliet by the Vesturport theater group , including a cover version of Ewan McColl's “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face”. The production was shown for the first time in Iceland in 2002, with further performances in October 2003 at the London “Young Vic Theater”, the following year in the “ West End ” and from November 4th to 7th, 2004 a film making-of on the occasion of the Nordic Film Days Lübeck the theatrical performance.

Havnevik was co-writer and singer in the song "Crazy" (2005) on the solo album of the former The Cranberries guitarist Noel Hogan and backing vocal for his "mono band". The backing vocals of the Britney Spears song Someday (I Will Understand) , released at the end of 2005, also come from the collaboration with Guy Sigsworth . Havnevik composed the music for the British short film “Jodie” (2005) by Dusan Tolmac , and another film is planned with the title Foreigner.

On Röyksopp's "The Under Standing" Kate participated (2005) as co-composer and guest singer in "Only This Moment" and "Circuit Breaker" - also has vocals to Röyksopp 's EP contributed "Röyksopp's Night Out". Havnevik has also worked with Marius de Vries, also producer of Björk , but also David Gray and Yoad Nevo , known for his work with the Welsh singer Jem - u. a. for the soundtrack of "Love is in the Air". Further collaborations arose with Moby , Tom Middleton , Valgeir Sigurdsson , Paul Statham and Beyond Dawn .

"Grey's Anatomy" and other TV soundtracks

Already on February 12, 2006, with episode II / 17 “As We Know It” from ABC's successful hospital drama “ Grey's Anatomy ”, “Unlike Me (A'cappella Version)”, the UK single from “ Melankton ”, presented unofficially, and in the later episode II / 24“ Nowhere Warm ”.

Kate composed a new song, titled "Grace," exclusively for the second season finale of "Grey's Anatomy," which was also featured on the second "Grey's Anatomy" soundtrack. Also, "Timeless" came later in season 3. “So: lo” (III / 4) will also be heard in the third season of the hospital series currently being produced by ABC (March 2007) and is already available exclusively on iTunes, as well as “Kaleidoscope” (III / 5) and “ New Day "(III / 9). Kate's seventh song contribution "Strangelove" (III / 16) for "Grey's Anatomy" was also used in an episode of The West Wing .

In collaboration with Carmen Rizzo , “Travel In Time” followed Rizzo's “The Lost Art of the Idle Moment”. The song was remixed for the UK version of "Melankton" and is part of the soundtrack of a season 3 episode of OC, California on US broadcaster FOX and an episode of the NBC TV series drama Windfall .

Current projects

Album number 3 with the title "& i" was released at the end of February 2015. As with "YOU", the artist relied on the crowdfunding platform PledgeMusic.com again this time and financed the finalization and production of the project.

In collaboration with Christopher von Deylens Projekt Schiller , the songs “Don't Go” and “The Fire” were created for the album Atemlos and the song “Ghost” for the limited DVD + CD edition Lichtblick .

On October 5th, 2012 Schiller's new album called "Sonne" was released on which Kate Havnevik participated in three songs: "Hallucinating Beauty", "Velvet Airplane" and "Oasis".

In November 2006, Kate Havnevik stopped recording in the studio to resume her live performances: on December 5, 2006, on Janice Long's show on BBC Radio 2 , with “Unlike me”, “I Don't Know You” and “New Day ". Before that, she performed in the famous “ Viper Room ” in Los Angeles and had live sessions on the independent LA radio station KCRW, a request from Nick Harcourt for his music show “Morning Becomes Eclectic”, which resulted in Kate Havnevik in the KRCW charts 5 with their demo tape "Breathe Deeper". Further concerts were in different cities in the USA, Norway, Iceland and England.
