David Gray (musician)
David Gray (born June 13, 1968 in Manchester ) is a British musician.
Career
David Gray is a songwriter and plays piano and guitar. He grew up in Wales , studied in Liverpool and initially played in punk bands. Eventually he moved to London and released his debut single Birds Without Wings in 1992 . His first album A Century Ends followed shortly afterwards . The debut album and its successor Flesh were praised by critics and musicians, but did not achieve any notable market success. Joan Baez spoke of the most important poet since Bob Dylan , and Bono from U2 also supported his career early on.
The breakthrough came with the fourth album White Ladder , which was published in the USA in 1999 as the first non-band album by ATO Records , and the single hit Babylon . This record company was co-founded by Dave Matthews . White Ladder became the most successful album of all time in Ireland with more than six million copies sold worldwide. White Ladder entered the UK charts in May 2000, took until August 2001 to reach the top position, making it the album that took the longest time to climb to number one after the first entry. The two follow-up albums A New Day at Midnight and Live in Slow Motion made it straight to the top of the British charts in 2002 and 2005, respectively.
In February 2006, Gray was on tour in Switzerland and Germany , among other things , and he also appeared at Rock am Ring and Rock im Park . In 2010 he reached the top ten in the USA for the first time with the album Foundling . In total, Gray has sold more than twelve million albums worldwide.
