Joan Fuster

Joan Fuster i Ortells ( dʒoˈan fusˈteɾ j oɾˈteʎs ) (born November 23, 1922 in Sueca , Valencia , † June 21, 1992 ibid) was a Spanish writer who published mainly in Catalan .

Life and works

Fuster was born in Sueca (near Valencia , Spain ). He came from a wealthy family. His parents were devout Catholics and Carlist . His father was a famous sculptor of religious sculptures. In 1947 Fuster completed his law degree . He received his doctorate in 1985 with a dissertation on Catalan philology. From 1946 to 1956 he was director of Verb magazine with José Albi . At the end of the 1940s he began writing for newspapers in València . He continued this into old age. He later published in Destino and La Vanguardia, among others . His first book publications were collections of poetry, including Escrit per al silenci ("Writings for the Silence") (1954).

With El descrèdit de la Realitat ("The Discredit of Reality") (1955) he began an important career as an essayist with a huge thematic breadth. One of the hallmarks of his style was the accurate use of adjectives. Another aspect of his work is his literacy and dedication to good storytelling. He also devoted himself to Valencian subjects, for example with the publication of one of his most famous works in 1962: Nosaltres els valencians (“We the Valencians”), the Qüestió de Noms (“Name Question”) and El País Valenciano (“The Valencian Land ”, in Spanish) is an important book on the history, culture and national identity problem of the Valencian community from a Catalan perspective.

He also dealt with these Valencian themes in the books Raimon (1964), Combustible per a falles (“Fuel for Falles”) (1967) and Ara o Mai (“Now or never”) (1981). These works and parts of his numerous studies and historical and biographical articles are in volumes I. and III. the Obres completes ("Complete Works") have been collected. The Diari ("Diary") (1952–1960) has been collected in Volume II.

Among his essays we can highlight these: Figures del temps ("Figures of Time"), Yxart Prize (1957), Judicis Finals ("Youngest Courts") (1960), Diccionari per a ociosos ("Dictionary for idlers") ( 1964), Causar-se d'esperar (" Working to wait") (1965), L'home, mesura de totes les coses ("The man, the measure of all things") (1967). Fuster was always within the tradition of classical humanism . His ideas were similar to those of the moralists and the French reformers (from Montaigne to the encyclopedists ). As a critic, Fuster was known for his sharp sense of humor. La Poesia Catalana (“Catalan poetry”) (1956), Poetes, Moriscos i Capellans (“Poets, Moors and Priests”) (1962), Heretgies, Revoltes i Sermons (“Heresies, revolts and sermons”) (1968) and Literatura Catalana Contemporània ("Today's Catalan Literature") (1972) are works by Fuster on history, literature and literary criticism. In addition, he wrote three extensive introductions for the works of Joan Salvat-Papasseit (1962), Salvador Espriu (1963) and Josep Pla (1966). They were collected in 1978 under the title Contra el Noucentisme ("Against Noucentism").

In 1987 he collected all of his poetic works in Set llibres de versos (“Seven Books of Verses”). Llibres i problemes del Renaixentisme ("Books and Problems of the Renaissance") (1989) is a collection of studies that he carried out during the last years of his life. In 1994 the books Fuster Inèdit ("Unpublished Fuster") and Fuster Sabàtic ("Sabbat-Fuster") were published.

meaning

Although he wrote prose, he is known for his essays, especially the political ones. His most important influential work is by far the book Nosaltres els valencians ("We the Valencians") (1962). Other books such as B. Qüestió de Noms ("Name question") and Diccionari per a Ociosos ("Dictionary for idlers") (1963) are known in the movement of Catalan nationalism . He became the intellectual leader of Valencian nationalism at the end of the 20th century. He was the main defender of the idea of the Països Catalans (Catalan lands). This idea promoted the unity of the countries where Catalan is spoken (particularly Catalonia , the Balearic Islands and the Valencian Community ). In these books, Fuster claimed that Valencia should have more relationships with other Catalan-speaking countries if the indigenous culture is to have a chance to survive. With this in mind, he tried to create a Catalan-speaking cultural community.

It is even claimed that Fuster is the most important political essayist in Catalan literature after the Spanish Civil War .

recognition

In 1975 he was awarded the Premi d'Honor de les Lletres Catalanes ("Catalan Humanities Prize"). He also received the Medalla d'Or de la Generalitat de Catalunya (“Golden Medal of the Catalan Government”) in 1983 . In 1984 he became emeritus at the University of Barcelona and at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. In 1986 he became a literature teacher and professor at the University of Valencia .

Attempted murder

On September 11, 1981, two bombs exploded in his home. These bombs damaged his library and archive. No one was prosecuted, but there was suspicion that the attack came from anti-Catalan and Fascist groups in Valencia because of Fuster's political and cultural views.
