Mark Mondesir (born December 12, 1964 in Stepney , London ) is a British jazz drummer.

Mark Mondesir began playing drums at the age of 12 and was mostly self-taught , that is, he listened to records and watched other drummers play; but also had lessons from Trevor Tomkins . At first he played more in the funk and fusion area and only got into jazz through weekend workshops in 1984/5, organized by Ian Carr . There he met Julian Joseph , who introduced him to Courtney Pine . Jam sessions were followed by regular appearances and recordings with Courtney Pine (including "Journey to the Urge within"), in whose band he was from 1985. After that, he was soon a sought-after jazz drummer in the UK and beyond, also being promoted by veterans such as Tony Williams and Dennis Chambers . From 1989 he worked as a freelancer. He played u. a. with the Jazz Warriors, the Jazz Crusaders , the Marsalis Brothers, Julian Joseph, John McLaughlin , Larry Coryell , Art Farmer , Joanne Brackeen , Kevin Eubanks (on his album "Turning Point" 1991 with Dave Holland ), Gary Thomas , McCoy Tyner , Joe Zawinul , Barbara Dennerlein , John Scofield , John Serry , Orphy Robinson and the Loose Tubes . Mondesir, who by his own admission does not want to be restricted to jazz, also played with Jethro Tull , Jeff Beck , Van Morrison , Brian Ferry , Keith More and Ronnie Wood .

Mark Mondesir is the brother of the composer and bass guitarist Michael Mondesir .
