Loose Tubes was a British big band from the 1980s.
history
Loose Tubes was a 21-piece big band set up as a musician cooperative that was active in the 1980s. Originally planned as a rehearsal tape, it was put together by Graham Collier in 1983 and had its first appearance in London in 1984; The first album was released in 1985. Loose Tubes and its members were soon touted for their fun and boisterous style in numerous articles in the British press, including The Guardian and The Times ; Finally, Loose Tubes was voted Best British Band of 1989 by The Wire magazine . Ian Carr describes Loose Tubes as one of the most original larger ensembles of the 1980s; the classic big band line-up was framed by tuba, bass clarinet, flute and percussion. The style characteristic of the formation was the mix of jazz with elements of rock, samba , Ghanaian highlife and other ethnic music.
Trombonist Ashley Slater (who later played in the pop group Freak Power ) acted as the band's host . The compositions were mostly written by keyboardist Django Bates and bassist Steve Berry . Besides the two, well-known musicians of the British jazz scene emerged from the formation, such as the brothers Julian and Steve Argüelles , Iain Ballamy , David Defries , Mark Lockheart , Eddie Parker and Tim Whitehead . In 1987, Loose Tubes were the first jazz orchestra to appear on the BBC classical program The Proms , the annual summer promenade concerts at the Royal Albert Hall . Her guest appearance at the Ronnie Scotts jazz club was legendary when, at the end of their performance at three in the morning, they were walking through the streets of Soho and the audience followed them.
In 1987 they appeared on the Berlin Waldbühne ; Teo Macero produced her third album Open Letter in 1988 , which was released on EG Records . 1990 Loose Tubes broke up; the reasons lay on the one hand in the economic crisis in the kingdom at the time, and on the other hand in the permanent difficulty of leading the big band collectively. In the course of its existence, Martin France , Oren Marshall , Mark Mondesir , Martin Speake , Dave Bitelli , Ralph Salmins and Huw Warren have also worked with the ensemble.
Even after the breakup, Loose Tubes had a major impact on younger musicians on the British scene; so the F-IRE Collective from Barak Schmool regards loose tubes as a model. In 1991 Django Bates formed the broad-based ensemble Delightful Precipice with former teammates . From loose tubes u. a. Formations such as the duo Human Chain (Bates and Steve Argüelles), the quartet The Lains by Iain Ballamy and a quintet by Tim Whitehead emerged.
