Oren Marshall

Oren Marshall (* 1966 ) is an English tuba player who is active in the field of classical, improvisational and jazz music.

Live and act

Marshall was a student of trumpeter Graham Dennis Sanders from 1979 to 1983 at the Shene Comprehensive School . From 1980 to 1986 he studied tuba at the Royal College of Music with Steven Wassell and John Jenkins . He also took private lessons from John Fletcher . In 1988 he graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with a licentiate .

Since the mid-1980s he has worked as a classical musician with most of the major orchestras in Great Britain, as well as with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra , with which he recorded Mahler's 9th and 10th Symphonies in 1985 under the direction of Eliahu Inbal . At the same time, he began a career as a soloist. In 1986 and 1987 he played Ralph Vaughan Williams ' tuba concerto in Edinburgh and London, in 1992 Valery Strukov's tuba concerto with the Orchester de la Suisse Romande in Geneva and in 1993 the world premiere of Jeremy Arden's Bayo's Way , a concerto for electric, in Queen Elizabeth Hall Tuba and wind ensemble. In 2001 he performed with percussionist Evelyn Glennie , trumpeter Håkan Hardenberger and trombonist Christian Lindberg at Wigmore Hall.

As a jazz musician, Marshall has worked with big bands like the Loose Tubes , Jazz Warriors , the Ubiquity Orchestra and the Tom Bancroft Orchestra since the 1980s , with smaller groups like Big Air (with Chris Batchelor , Steve Buckley , Myra Melford and Jim Black ) and the Low Frequency Tuba Project (with Marcus Rojas , Jay Rozen and Sergio Carolino ) and trio and duo formations a. a. with Steve Noble , Davey Williams , Steve Buckley, Paul Dunmall , Billy Jenkins , Abram Wilson and Maurizio Ravalico . In 2002 and 2003 he was nominated for the BBC Innovation in Jazz Award .

On tours to Africa, Marshall worked in Ghana with the group Kakatsitsi , the Pan-African Orchestra , the Ghana Dance Ensemble Drummers , the West African Folkloric Troupe of Ghana , the Dromé Cultural Group and the Ghana Cultural Ballet , in Sudan with Rasha and Wafir Shekheldin , in Algeria with Abdelkader Sadhoun and in South Africa with the Ntchuks Bonga Quartet .

Marshall has been teaching tuba at the Royal College of Music since 1988, where he has been a visiting professor since 2003, and jazz ensemble playing at the Royal Academy of Music since 1988 . He also holds teaching positions at the Royal Northern College of Music , the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama , the Royal Welsh College of Music and the Guildhall School of Music .
