Davey Williams
Davey Williams (* 1952 in York , Alabama ; † April 5, 2019 ) was an American jazz , rock and improvisation musician and author.
Live and act
Williams played guitar from the age of twelve. He was a member of the rock band of his high school (1968-70) and was part of the band of Johnny Shines during his student days , with whom he also performed occasionally in the late 1980s. He also performed with the Salt & Pepper Soul Band Show (1971-74) and the University of Alabama 'B' Jazz Ensemble . He played regularly with LaDonna Smith , with whom he founded the Duo TransMuseq and the studio of the same name for improvisation music in 1974 .
In 1978 Williams made his first tour of the USA, followed by his first European tour the next year. Since the early 1980s he has also appeared as a solo guitarist. He worked with the blues band Trains In Trouble in the mid-1980s and joined the group Curlew in 1986 around the musicians George Cartwright , Tom Cora , Wayne Horvitz and Ann Rupel , of which he was a member until the late 1990s.
He also worked with Col. Bruce Hampton since the mid-1980s and was a member of the punk band Fuzzy Suns for a year in the early 1990s . As an improvisation musician and interpreter of new music , he worked with the trio Say What! and musicians like Jim Staley and Ikue Mori . Since the mid-1970s, Williams has appeared in well over 1,500 concerts and has appeared on over forty albums.
In 1981 Williams was one of the founders of the magazine for new improvisational music, the improvisor . He wrote (between 1987 and 1989) music reviews for the Birmingham News , wrote articles on music history for the journal Experimental Musical Instruments , articles for various music magazines and liner notes for records and CDs. He was also the author of the cartoon book Which Came First: the Fried Chicken or the Fried Egg? .
Williams died in April 2019 of complications from cancer.
