Myra Melford
Myra Melford (born January 5, 1957 in Evanston , Illinois ) is an American jazz pianist and composer.
Live and act
Melford grew up in Chicago and studied piano and composition at Evergreen State College through 1981 ; In addition, she took jazz at the Cornish Institute in Seattle and piano education at the Manhattan School of Music . She also took private lessons from Jaki Byard , Henry Threadgill and Don Pullen . After moving to New York City , from 1984 she performed with Butch Morris , Oliver Lake and Leroy Jenkins . 1986 came solo appearances.
In 1990 she founded her trio with Lindsey Horner and Reggie Nicholson , which she later expanded with Dave Douglas and Marty Ehrlich . She also directed a larger improvisational ensemble, The Same River Twice (CD of the same name, 1996). She also played with Fred Frith , Kirk Lightsey , Anne LeBaron , Han Bennink , Alister Spence and Marion Brandis , the Soldier String Quartet and her group Crush (including Kenny Wollesen ). Melford regularly visited Europe and performed at the Moers Festival as well as the festivals in Leverkusen , Saalfelden , Willisau and Verona .
In 2000 she studied the harmonium intensively during a study trip to North India . Melford is also a lecturer for various institutions; she currently teaches at the University of California, Berkeley . Since 1991 she has been recognized several times as an important new talent in the critical poll of the Down Beat .
In May 2018 she was a member of Allison Miller's sextet Boom Tic Boom for two concerts during a European tour in Germany.
