Reggie Nicholson

Reginald "Reggie" Nicholson (* in Chicago ) is an American drummer , percussionist and composer of avant-garde jazz .

Nicholson has been a member of the Chicago music collective Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians since 1979 ; in the 1970s he worked a. a. with Edward Wilkerson in his formation Shadow Vignettes (to be heard on the album Birth of a Notion ) with Kahil El'Zabar . In the 1980s he played a. a. in the trio by Amina Claudine Myers ( Jumping in the Sugarbowl , 1984). In 1988 he moved to New York City , where he played a. a. in the Charles Gayle Quartet with Sirone and John Tchicai (1988) and in the Lindsey Horner sextet with Marty Ehrlich and Herb Robertson . During this time he also worked with musicians such as Don Pullen , Jon Hendricks , Billy Bang , Melvin Sparks , Abdullah Ibrahim , Sonny Rollins , Hamiet Bluiett .

In the early 1990s he was a member of Myra Melford's Trio with Lindsey Horner ( Alive in the House of Saints 1993), worked with Leroy Jenkins ' quintet ( Live!, 1992) and in the mid-1990s in the Muhal Richard Abrams Orchestra ( Family Talk ), also during this time with Roy Campbell , Thomas Borgmann , Butch Morris and in Ernest Dawkins ' New Horizons Ensemble . In 1994 he worked with Thomas Chapin and Tom Harrell . In 2000 he formed a duo with Wilber Morris. In 2006 he played in the Yuko Fujiyama Ensemble. He currently plays in the AACM Fire Trio (with Jodie Christian and Art Brown ) and again in the trio with Amina Claudine Myers. In addition, Nicholson works with his formation The Reggie Nicholson Concept with saxophonist Vandy Harris and trumpeter Orbert Davis .

In 2005, the solo album Percussion Peace was released , a suite-like work on which the drummer added programmed beats to drum sequences on some pieces.
