Thomas Borgmann (* 1955 in Münster ) is a German musician (tenor, soprano, sopranino saxophone ) and composer of jazz and free improvisation music .

Live and act

Borgmann first played in the early 1980s mainly in the Berlin Art Ensemble around Nick Steinhaus (1981 tour of South America for the Goethe Institute , 1982 Nickelsdorfer Konfrontationen) then in the Sirone Sextet (New York 1987), in the Hidden Quartet (with Dietmar Diesner , Erik Balke , Jonas Akerblom) as well as at Noise & Toys (with Valery Dudkin, Sascha Kondraschkin). He founded the Orkestra Kith'N Kin in 1991 (with Hans Reichel , John Tchicai , Pat Thomas , Jay Oliver , Mark Sanders , Lol Coxhill and others). He then toured with his quartet Ruf der Heimat , which he founded in 1993 (with Ernst-Ludwig Petrowsky , Peter Brötzmann , Willi Kellers , Christoph Winckel ) and with the trio Blue Zoo with Borah Bergman and Brötzmann. 1984–1996 he organized the STAKKATO festival in Berlin.

Since the mid-1990s he worked with Wilber Morris and Denis Charles in the BMC trio . Also in the Alliance quartet with Petrowsky, DJ jayrope and Michael Griener and in Boom Box (initially with Tony Buck and Joe Williamson ). After Denis Charles died in 1998, he worked with Reggie Nicholson and Wilber Morris in the BMN trio until 2002 . In his trio Boom Box he now plays with Willi Kellers and Akira Andō . He performed at many international jazz festivals.

He also played with Caspar Brötzmann , André Jaume , Jason Kahn, Tony Buck , Paul Lytton , Evan Parker , Conny Bauer , Johannes Bauer , Charles Gayle , Lol Coxhill , Phil Minton , William Parker , Jason Hwang , Heinz Sauer , Thurston Moore , Enver Ismailov , Shoji Hano , Alexander von Schlippenbach , Vladimir Chekasin , Rashied Bakr , Roy Campbell , Melvyn Poore , Perry Robinson , Vattel Cherry, Kip Hanrahans Latin Groove and Jean-Paul Bourelly .

Prizes and awards

In 1994 and 1996 Borgmann was the winner of the Berlin Jazz Grant.
