Shōji Hano ( Japanese 羽 野 昌 二 , Hano Shōji ; born March 1, 1955 in Kokura , Fukuoka Prefecture ) is a Japanese jazz musician ( drums , percussion ).

life and work

Hano moved to Kyoto in 1974 and began playing avant-garde jazz . In 1980 he founded the band Odowara and organized monthly concerts for a year at the University of Kyoto ; in the same year live recordings were made with Yoshito Ōsawa and Toshinori Kondō . In 1981 he founded the Easy Music Band with guitarists Haruhiko Gotsu and Tetsu Yamauchi on the electric bass . Shoji Hano played together with Japanese musicians Kaoru Abe , saxophonist Mototeru Takagi , trumpeter Masahiko Kōno and American musicians such as guitarist Henry Kaiser , Eugene Chadbourne , Tristan Honsinger and German musicians, including Hans Reichel and Peter Brötzmann .

In 1985 Hano began to develop his own style based on the concept of Shintaido . With Yamauchi and Gotsu he founded the band OPE, which existed from 1986 to 1989. In 1990 Hano left Japan for the first time to play in Europe. With Hans Reichel and the guitarist Wädi Gysi , he toured Switzerland, Austria and Germany; in New York he played with William Parker ( Flower Grow in My Room ). Between 1991 and 1994 he toured Japan and Germany annually with Peter Brötzmann; Recordings were made with Werner Lüdi , Tetsu Yamauchi and William Parker. Hano has also toured Sweden, Russia and Lithuania. In 1998 Hano became a member of the psychedelic rock band High Rise and toured with them through England and France (other members are Munehiro Narita, guitar and Asahito Nanjo , bass, vocals). In the field of jazz he was involved in twelve recording sessions from 1980 to 2009, according to Tom Lord .
