Werner Lüdi (musician)
Werner Lüdi (born April 22, 1936 in Poschiavo , Graubünden ; † June 21, 2000 in Malans , Graubünden) was a Swiss jazz musician ( alto and baritone saxophone ) and author.
Life
Lüdi spent his first years in Puschlav and his youth in Landquart , where he played the accordion in a band. He discovered cool jazz and played the baritone saxophone in Toni Schädler's band. In 1958 he moved to Hamburg, where he at jam sessions involved, while Peter Brötzmann met, but a band of the first no connection Modern Jazz could find.
In 1964 he went on tour as an alto saxophonist with Gunter Hampel's band and then to Munich, where he jammed with Pierre Favre before returning to Switzerland in 1966 to work as a photographer and in the PR department of a tire department. He then worked as a copywriter in an advertising agency.
In 1981 Lüdi got back into the jazz scene: together with Stephan Wittwer , Fredy Studer and Léon Francioli he founded the group Sunnymoon . In 1984 Hans Koch , Martin Schütz , Timo Fleig and Lüdi played free improvisation music under this name . Her appearance at the Jazz Festival Zurich in 1984 was rated by the critics as the “great moment of Swiss jazz”. Later Koch, Schütz and Lüdi played together with Wittwer and Paul Lovens , at the end of the 1980s he played with Mani Neumeier , Wädi Gysi and the trumpeter Mich Gerber as Blauer Hirsch . He was considered the "wild boar among Swiss free jazz musicians".
He later performed with Brötzmann's March combo , played with Butch Morris , Sainkho Namtchylak and Peter Kowald , but also performed with William Parker , Saadet Türköz , Burhan Öçal (at the Montreux Jazz Festival ), Peter Conradin Zumthor and Daniel Seiler.
He also had a regular column in the WoZ ; For his tour report “From Russia with Laugh” he was awarded the Zurich Journalism Prize.
