Fredy Studer
Fredy Studer (born June 16, 1948 in Lucerne ) is a Swiss drummer in jazz and new music .

Live and act
In 1972 he was a founding member of the Lucerne rock jazz quartet OM . In this group he and his schoolmate, guitarist Christy Doran , saxophonist Urs Leimgruber and double bass player Bobby Burri successfully toured Switzerland and Germany for almost a decade with "Electricjazz-Freemusic".
He also worked as a drummer in the “ Franco Ambrosetti - George Gruntz Quintet” (with Joe Henderson , Miroslav Vitouš or with Larry Schneider and Dave Holland ) and with the “Percussion Profiles” ( Jack DeJohnette , Pierre Favre , Dom Um Romão , David Friedman , George Gruntz). In the 1980s he played in a trio with Rainer Brüninghaus and Markus Stockhausen and with Stephan Wittwer and Christy Doran in “Red Twist & Tuned Arrow”, but also in Favre's group “Singing Drums” (with Paul Motian , Naná Vasconcelos ) and in the " Charlie Mariano - Jasper van't Hof Group".
During the last decades Studer has been active in a wide variety of groups and projects. He gave and gives concerts and workshops, made radio and television recordings, music for dance performances as well as theater and film music all over Europe, Africa, Japan, South America, the Caribbean, Taiwan, India, the former Soviet Union, Canada and the USA.
Current groups and projects include the “Hardcore Chamber Music Trio” with Hans Koch and Martin Schütz (also expanded as “Roots and Wires”), which has been in existence since 1990 , a Jimi Hendrix project (most recently with Christy Doran, Erika Stucky and Kim Clarke and Jamaaladeen Tacuma ) as well as the percussion trios (with Robyn Schulkowsky and Joey Baron on the one hand and Hamid Drake and Michael Zerang on the other). He also played and published duos with Schulkowsky, but also with Jin Hi Kim , Joëlle Léandre, Dorothea Schürch , Ami Yoshida and Beth Coleman - members of the New York Illbient avant-garde scene and known there as DJ M.Singe .
Studer occasionally played in Robyn Schulkowsky's percussion ensemble as an interpreter of compositions by Charles Ives , Steve Reich , John Cage and Edgard Varèse .
Fredy Studer was one of the first drummers to combine elements of open improvisation and rock grooves in his style. His work is documented on over eighty sound carriers.
In 1991 Studer received the recognition award from the City of Lucerne's Art and Culture Prize . In 2003 he was awarded the Art and Culture Prize of the City of Lucerne .
