Kim Clarke (born November 14, 1954 in New York City ) is an American jazz bassist ( electric bass , double bass ) and music teacher.

Life

Clarke comes from a musical family; her grandfather Henry "Hy" Clarke, Sr. was a trombonist and bass player. After studying communication science ( City College of New York ) and music ( Long Island University ) in New York (BA), she played with Barry Harris and Art Blakey , but also with the M-Base Collective . In Europe she is best known for her longstanding membership of Joseph Bowies Defunkt (she is involved in 17 LPs and CDs of the group). She toured as a double bass player in 1986 and 1987 with Joe Henderson . Over the years she has also played and recorded with the following jazz musicians: Yusef Lateef , Oliver Lake , Jack McDuff , Urszula Dudziak , George Gruntz , Rachel Z , James Blood Ulmer , Marilyn Mazur , Wallace Roney , Cindy Blackman , Annie Whitehead , Herb Robertson , Sibylle Pomorin , Teri Thornton and Bertha Hope . She has also worked in the Kit McClure Big Band and the National Black Theater . She is also active in the New York Latin jazz scene. Most recently she appeared in Christy Doran's Jimi Hendrix project with Erika Stucky and Fredy Studer and as bassist for Charles Davis in Europe.

2003, 2004 and 2005, Clarke was one of the producers of LADY GOT CHOPS Women's Month Jazz Festival (Brooklyn's Newest Jazz Cafe).
