At the age of eleven, Doran moved with his family to Lucerne , where he has lived ever since. His father, a ballad singer, came into contact with music and, as a teenager, was mainly influenced by the music of Jimi Hendrix and John Coltrane . He attended the conservatories in Bern and Lucerne and the Bern Jazz School . During this time he played in the Jazz-Rock-Experience of Bruno Spoerri and Hans Kennel in 1969 and 1970 . In 1972 he founded the electric jazz group OM with Bobby Burri , Urs Leimgruber and Fredy Studer , where Doran was primarily responsible for the compositions. The band successfully toured Europe, performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival and released five records at the time. Doran played for OM until it was dissolved in 1982 .

In 1984 Doran worked in his own septet with Norma Winstone , Urs Leimgruber, Rosko Gee , Trilok Gurtu , Dom Um Romão and Dave Doran , his younger brother, as drummers. From 1985 to 1987 he played with Studer and the guitarist Stephan Wittwer in the group Red Twist & Tuned Arrow (CD 1985). He then appeared with Studer and Burri as well as with Olivier Magnenat as the second double bass player; a second project with the double bass line-up began in 1994 with Jamaaladeen Tacuma and Jean-François Jenny-Clark . Initially in a duo, he performed with trombonist Ray Anderson from 1989 (later as a trio with Han Bennink ). Since 1993 Doran has played with the American flautist Robert Dick and the British drummer Steve Argüelles in the trio ADD. Between 1993 and 1996 Doran and Studer had their first Jimi-Hendrix project (with Amin Ali , Phil Minton and Tom Cora or Django Bates ; in on a later project they worked with Erika Stucky and Kim Clarke ). Doran formed a trio with John Wolf Brennan and Patrice Héral , which was later expanded to include the singer Bruno Amstad .

In 1997 Doran founded his New Bag with Bruno Amstad , voice, Fabian Kuratli , drums, and Wolfgang Zwiauer, e-bass, which was expanded to include the South Indian mridangam player Muthuswamy Balasubramoniam and keyboardist Hans-Peter Pfammatter ; In 2013 the band was reshuffled with vocalist Sarah Buechi , keyboardist Vincent Membrez and drummer Lionel Friedli . He also played with Reto Weber and Albert Mangelsdorff and in a trio with Heiri Känzig and Fabian Kuratli. He also played with Sonny Sharrock and since 2007 occasionally in the reunion of OM . He has recorded CDs with Marty Ehrlich , Hank Roberts , Gary Thomas , Mark Helias , Bobby Previte and Airto Moreira .

Doran was also co-founder of the Lucerne Jazz School (now the Lucerne School of Music ) in 1972 , where he has been teaching guitar, jazz and free improvisation ever since. In addition to teaching, he writes music for theater, film and ballet. He is married and has two sons. Doran's siblings, drummer Dave and saxophonist Brigeen Doran , are also jazz musicians.
