Olivier Magnenat

Olivier Magnenat (* May 22, 1950 ; † February 27, 2011 ) was a Swiss double bass player of jazz and new improvisation music .

Live and act

Magnenat studied double bass at the Conservatories of Geneva and Lausanne and played in various classical music ensembles, such as with Michel Corboz . In the 1970s he began to teach himself about jazz and improvised music . In 1973 he was one of the founders of the AMR ( association pour la musique improvisée ) and organized the association's first rehearsal rooms, from which numerous improvisation musicians emerged. In the 1970s he worked with musicians from the AMR such as Maurice Magnoni (with whom he recorded several albums), Claude Tabarini, Philippe Nicolet and Alain Monnier; he also taught at the Geneva Conservatory of Music . In the 1980s he played with Christy Doran in the formation Under Control and toured Europe and North America with the Christy Doran Quartet .

He also played in the experimental trio Kutteldaddeldu with the pianist Jacques Demierre and the saxophonist Urs Blöchlinger , with whom there were also recordings. During this time he also played with François Lindemann and with Christy Doran, Bobby Burri and Fredy Studer ( music for two double basses, electric guitar & drums , ECM 1990) In 1999 he founded the formation YOC with trombonist Yves Massy and pianist Christophe Tiberghien . As chairman of the AMR several times, Magnenat organized numerous festivals, such as the Festival de la Bâtie . Magnenat also worked outside of the jazz and improvisation scene, u. a. with the theater maker Jacques Probst.
