Maurice Magnoni

Maurice Magnoni (born December 1, 1948 in Geneva ) is a Swiss jazz musician ( tenor and baritone saxophone , clarinets , composition ).

Magnoni studied from 1955 to 1965 at the Geneva Conservatory of Music, especially piano , harmony and composition. As a saxophonist he is self-taught . In 1973 he started as a professional jazz musician in Switzerland. In 1981 he appeared at the Willisau Jazz Festival in a trio with Daniel Humair and Jean-François Jenny-Clark . Since 1982 he lived in Paris; in the same year he played in the unit of Michel Portal at the European Jazz Festival Le Mans ; then François Jeanneau brought him into the first edition of the Orchester National de Jazz . Since 1983 he has toured with Barre Phillips , Pierre Favre , Enrico Rava , Mark Helias , Barry Altschul and Urs Leimgruber . In 1985 he presented himself in Paris and later in Brussels with a ten-piece orchestra, L'Etat des sons ; since the same year he worked with Carla Bley and Steve Swallow in their Euro-American band, some of which also consisted of members of the Vienna Art Orchestra .

After performing in a duo with Jack DeJohnette in 1987 , he toured Italy with his new Electric Jazz Quartet , which performed across Europe in the early 1990s. He has now released several albums under his own name. Since the late 1980s he has also been a member of François Lindemann's octet ( Different Masks , Montreux Jazz & Swiss Movement, Live in USA ), with whom he toured North America. In 1992 he founded a new quintet with Matthieu Michel , with whom he performed in Eastern Europe and West Africa. Since 1993 he has worked with his student Erik Truffaz , with whom he formed a quintet at the Geneva Jazz Festival in 1994 and 1995. In 1996 he performed with Béatrice Graf on drums and Olivier Magnenat on bass in the Trio MGM . He also played in a quartet with Serge Lazarevitch , Michel Marre and Joël Allouche and in a duo with Franco D'Andrea . Furthermore, several productions were made with the Big Band de Lausanne and Pascal Auberson . He was also involved in albums with Alvin Queen , Heiri Känzig , the Direzione Sud ( Estrella del norte ) and Alain Guyonnet & Maria Calvo Samaniego ( Metisagesse ). Tom Lord recorded 35 Magnoni recordings between 1981 and 2011.
