Michel Marre

Michel Marre (born August 12, 1946 in Rodez ) is a French jazz trumpeter (also flugelhorn , tuba , euphonium , Clairon , saxophone , piano ) and composer .

Live and act

After completing classical piano training, Marre discovered jazz at the age of 18; he began his career as a jazz musician with the New Orleans Hot Peppers , who played the repertoire of King Oliver , Louis Armstrong , Duke Ellington and Fletcher Henderson . From 1971 he spent two years in Africa and discovered the possibilities of free jazz . After his return to France he studied the music of southern France and Brittany and took part in several recordings of the Intercommunal Free Dance Music Orchestra by François Tusques , most recently on the album Après la Marée Noire (1979).

In 1979 Merre founded the Afro-Occitan fusion jazz formation Cossi Anatz , with whom he performed at various festivals. In 1985 he accompanied Archie Shepp and worked on his album Hommage à Billie Holiday . As a sideman he worked a. a. with Sophia Domancich , Claude Martí , Jean-Marc Padovani , Louis Sclavis , Daniel Humair , Jean-Marie Carlotti , Marc Ducret , Mal Waldron , Henri Texier ( La Companera , 1989) and Serge Lazarevitch .

In 1998 Marre received a scholarship for a stay at the Villa Medici , where he devoted himself to composing new music . After returning to France, he wrote music for orchestra and founded Gavachs , a twelve-piece orchestra with Indian and French musicians, which also includes unusual instrumental timbres such as the hurdy-gurdy and exotic drums such as the dholak and crotales . In the 2000s he toured Rajasthan , Romania and Hungary; in Russia he worked with the Novosibirsk Orchestra and in Kyrgyzstan with the Kyrgyz national ensemble . With 120 musicians he put together the formation Harmonie Européenne ; From 2006 he was a member of the Orchester National de Jazz under the direction of Franck Tortiller for three years . In 2011 he founded the Michel Marre Ethnic Héritage , which was presented at the Festival de Radio France .
