Hans Kennel

Hans Kennel (born April 20, 1939 in Schwyz ) is a Swiss jazz musician (trumpet, flugelhorn , alphorn ).

Live and act

Kennel learned trumpet in a youth music group and then studied at the conservatories in Freiburg im Üechtland and Zurich . During this time he already performed with Bruno Spoerri's band , but also with Oscar Pettiford . At the beginning of the 1960s he was considered the leading hardbop trumpeter in Switzerland and worked across Europe; between 1962 and 1969 he performed with Kenny Clarke , Mal Waldron , Albert Mangelsdorff , Waldi Heidepriem , Abdullah Ibrahim , George Gruntz , Remo Rau , Irène Schweizer , Alex Bally and Pierre Favre . Then he founded the “Jazz Rock Experience” with Spoerri. After a break he played with Paul Haag , Klaus Koenig and Peter Schmidlin in the fusion jazz group “MAGOG” in the mid-1970s , with whom he appeared at international festivals. From 1977 he headed the group "Jazz Community"; In 1982 he founded the “Alpine Jazz Herd” with Jürg Solothurnmann . He then worked with Urs Blöchlinger and Carla Bley before founding the ethno-jazz band "Habarigani", with which he performed between 1987 and 1996 (also in the USA) and made several records. Since 1990 he has also played in his alphorn quartet "Mytha", which also appears with the singer Betty Legler . Since 1992 he has worked on various projects with Steve Lacy . His septet " Alpine Experience ", which was based on the concept of the "Alpine Jazz Herd", made a guest appearance at the 1999 Montreux Jazz Festival . Kennel also performed with Glenn Ferris , Art Lande , John Tchicai , Mathias Rüegg , Hans Koch , John Wolf Brennan and Wolfgang Muthspiel .

In addition, Kennel also writes film music (e.g. for documentaries by Erich Langjahr ) and choral music. In 1998 he was honored with the Central Swiss Culture Prize for his “pioneering and committed examination of elements of Alpine music in the border areas of folk music, jazz and classical music” .
