Waldi Heidepriem
Ewald "Waldi" Heidepriem (born December 26, 1929 , † October 17, 1998 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German jazz pianist and scale builder.
Heidepriem was the founder and pianist of the Modern Jazz Group Freiburg in the late 1950s . He also accompanied musicians like Barney Wilen with his trio . Despite a severe injury to his right hand and a permanent handicap, he acquired a remarkable playing technique and was considered one of the leading pianists of modern jazz in southern Germany. Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer introduced him as one of four pianists on his early piano album Piano x 4 . Heidepriem made close contacts with the Basel jazz scene and played more often in Switzerland in the early 1960s.
Heidepriem, whose sons Thomas and Lucas also became jazz musicians, formed the backbone of the Freiburg Jazz House since the mid-1980s . The Freiburg Jazz Prize is named after him.
