The Jazzhaus Freiburg is a jazz club in Freiburg im Breisgau . The old wine cellar under the Goethe-Institut in Schnewlinstraße is not only geared towards jazz, but has been designed as a multi-branch house since the planning phase and lives from the live concerts. The Freiburg Rock Initiative, the Folk and Blues Club, the Freiburg Jazz and Rock School and the Oldtime Jazz Initiative work together here. The Jazzhaus has also had its own record label, Jazzhaus Records , since 2005 .

history

The history of jazz house Freiburg began on June 6, 1985 a letter from Waldi Heidepriem at the Freiburg jazz scene. Then more than 60 people met on June 26, 1985 in the Mooswaldbierstube and founded the Freiburg Jazzhaus initiative . The idea for this came up at the tent music festival in a conversation in which Waldi Heidepriem and Rolf Böhme - then Lord Mayor of Freiburg - took part. On November 13, 1985, the founding meeting of the Freiburg Jazzhaus Association was held , at which Heidepriem was also elected first chairman. The renovation work began immediately afterwards, on October 10, 1987 one of the showpieces of the basement - the large Bösendörfer grand piano , on which Miles Davis later also played - was delivered. The Jazzhaus was opened on October 16, 1987, where the Albert-Louis-Jazzband, Charlie Roman, Free Dig Bigband, Gigolo-Reinhardt Swingtett, Hallelujah Stompers, Mary Silvester, Ray Austin , The Gang and others played. a. Joachim-Ernst Berendt described it as "certainly one of the most beautiful jazz cellars in the world".

The first crisis arose in 1994/95 when the municipal council planned to cancel the small subsidies. After a troubled time after the death of the founder and chairman Waldi Heidepriem, Christian Hodeige and Herbert Schiffels followed as first chairmen. The jazz cellar could be realigned against external criticism. The change in the classification of events as commercial events and no longer as cultural events, which led to high tax back payments, caused financial turmoil again. As a result, the association split into a non-profit association and an operating company. The purpose of the association is the maintenance and further development of jazz music with related areas and currents such as rock and folk music in particular, the promotion of exercise and the next generation. This also includes the operation of the Freiburg Jazz House. After further financial difficulties, the completely renovated Jazzhaus was presented to the public in 2001 thanks to sponsors. Christian Hodeige handed over his office as chairman to Herbert Schiffels and a smaller, newly elected board. We are happy that we were able to master the difficulties without bankruptcy and combine the charitable goals of the association with the economically necessary goals of the operating company and thus the existence of the Jazzkeller is secured.
