Peter Schmidlin
Peter Schmidlin (born December 28, 1947 in Riehen ; † May 25, 2015 ) was a Swiss jazz musician and producer. Alongside Daniel Humair and Pierre Favre , he was one of the internationally renowned drummers from Switzerland. Since 1991 he has headed the jazz label TCB .
Live and act
Schmidlin began playing drums as an autodidact at the age of 14 in 1961 . In 1963, at the age of 16, he won the prize for best drummer at the Zurich International Jazz Festival in Zurich. He began a career as a professional musician in 1965 and played for the first time with American jazz musicians such as Buck Clayton , Sir Charles Thompson Jr. , Don Byas , Helen Humes and Bob Carter. In the next few years he took part in various jazz festivals in Europe. Between 1971 and 1983 he was a permanent member of the '' Jazz-live Trio '' of Radio Zurich . He took part in over 100 live concerts at Radio Studio Zurich with musicians such as Johnny Griffin , Dexter Gordon , Franco Ambrosetti , George Gruntz , Benny Bailey , Gunther Schuller , Art Farmer , Sahib Shihab , Slide Hampton , Jiggs Whigham , Lee Konitz , Kai Winding , Albert Mangelsdorff , Ferdinand Povel , Volker Kriegel , Karlhanns Berger , Enrico Rava , Horace Parlan , Tony Scott , Idrees Sulieman , Clifford Jordan or Eje Thelin . Between 1972 and 1977 he was also a member of the rock jazz band Magog ; this internationally very successful Swiss group played at the Jazz Festival Montreux 1972 & 1974, at other European festivals (Châteauvallon, Alassio, Bologna, Bergamo, Ljubljana, Přerov, Brno, Zurich, Willisau ).
Between 1978 and 1990 he worked in Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Austria and France with z. B. the Tete Montoliu Trio, Horace Parlan Trio, Benny Bailey Quintet, Dusko Goykovich Quintet, George Robert Quartet, Jimmy Woode Trio, Clark Terry , Dee Dee Bridgewater , Curtis Fuller or the Sal Nistico / Rachel Gould Quintet. In 1989 he was involved in the Swiss TV production Jazz In with Cedar Walton , Andy Scherrer , Gary Burton and Marc Johnson . On the occasion of the 700th anniversary of Switzerland in 1991 he went on a world tour with the George Robert Quartet (partly including Clark Terry) through 13 countries (USA, Canada, Philippines, Indonesia, Bali, Singapore, Malaysia, India, Thailand, Dubai and Abu Dhabi) . Later there were tours with Benny Bailey, Tom Kirkpatrick, William Evans, Clark Terry, the George Robert Quartet, Hans Kennel , Paul Haag , Mark Soskin, Franco Ambrosetti and Buddy DeFranco . Since 2002 he has been a permanent member of the Thierry Lang Trios; Between 2003 and 2007 he was involved in the recording of five CDs on the jazz label Blue Note Records with the Thierry Lang Trio plus guests (Andy Scherrer, Paolo Fresu , Didier Lockwood , Olivier Ker Ourio , George Robert and Heiri Känzig ). In 2004 a CD was recorded with Carlo Schöb, Peter Eigenmann and Isla Eckinger .
In 1991 he founded TCB Music SA , Montreux ("TCB - The Montreux Jazz Label"), where he published over 200 productions and sold them internationally. In the same year he was the organizer of the first TCB Night at the Montreux Jazz Festival for Claude Nobs ; he also produced the TCB-Night 1999 there. From 2000 he designed the 'Swiss Jazz Club' at the Midem, the world's largest music fair, and programmed and presented this club for five years. From 2001 onwards, 'Ollon du Jazz' (with Thierry Lang and Yvan Ischer), a 3-day, top-class festival near Montreux, was created. From 2000 to 2003 he was a member of the jury for the 'Chrysler Jazz Awards' at the Montreux Jazz Festival. In 2004 he organized the Ollon du Jazz Festival in Riehen (Basel) for the first time .
In 2002 he became a member of the board of the 'SMS', the association of Swiss jazz and improvising musicians, as well as the successor of Claude Nobs on the board of trustees of the Suisa Foundation for Music.
Schmidlin received the SUISA Foundation Prize for Music in 1998 for his work as a musician and CD producer.
