Franco Ambrosetti

Franco Ambrosetti (born December 10, 1941 in Lugano , Switzerland) is a Swiss industrialist and jazz musician ( trumpeter and flugelhorn player ). Because of his voluminous yet fiery trumpet playing, he is , according to Martin Kunzler , an internationally renowned hardbop soloist .

Live and act

Ambrosetti grew up as the son of the tenor saxophonist and manufacturer Flavio Ambrosetti . He received classical piano training from 1952 to 1959 and then learned to play the trumpet and later also the flugelhorn. In 1961 he made his debut as a professional musician, mainly in the jazz clubs of Milan . He has led his own band in Zurich since the mid-1960s and also studied economics in Basel .

In 1964 he made recordings with George Gruntz and with Gato Barbieri under the direction of Giorgio Azzolini , in 1965 with the Flavio Ambrosetti All Stars with George Gruntz and Daniel Humair and in Milan with the Franco D'Andrea quartet . In 1966 he received first prize at the International Jazz Competition in Vienna organized by Friedrich Gulda .

In 1967 he made his US debut with his father's band, of which he was a member until 1970, at the Monterey Jazz Festival . In 1972 he founded the group The Band with his father, George Gruntz and Daniel Humair , with which he performed regularly and which later became The George Gruntz Concert Jazz Band .

Since the 1970s he has worked with musicians such as Phil Woods , Dexter Gordon , Cannonball Adderley , Joe Henderson , Michael Brecker , Mike Stern , Hal Galper and Kenny Clarke ; as a band leader he worked with Michael Brecker, Kenny Kirkland , John Scofield , Ron Carter , Bennie Wallace , Phil Woods, Dave Holland , Kenny Barron , Victor Lewis and Seamus Blake and led a quartet with Alfredo Golino, Antonio Faraò and Dado Moroni . Since 1999 his son Gianluca Ambrosetti has been involved in his bands more often .

Ambrosetti paid tribute to the Third Stream with his Music for Symphony & Jazz Band . He also composed film scores, including for Markus Imhoof's Die Reise .

In addition, Ambrosetti had his own jazz show on Ticino Radio RSI for more than thirty years . From 1973 to 2000 he headed the family company Ambrosetti Technologies full-time . He sold it in order to devote himself entirely to music from now on. He was also President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Canton of Ticino and worked as a consultant for many years . In 2018 he was awarded the Swiss Jazz Award .
