Michael Mossman

Michael Philip Mossman (born October 12, 1959 in Philadelphia ) is an American jazz musician ( trumpet , flugelhorn , arrangement , composition) who has also emerged as a band leader and university lecturer.

Live and act

Mossman began his career in Anthony Braxton's Creative Orchestra , with whom he toured Europe in 1978. He then worked with Roscoe Mitchell / Wadada Leo Smith (1979). In the 1980s he played in such diverse formations as in John Lindberg's Ensemble ( Trilogy of Works for Eleven Instrumentalists ), in Franco Ambrosetti's Tentett and with Lionel Hampton (1984).
In the mid-1980s he became a member of the formation Out of the Blue and played briefly with Art Blakeys Jazz Messengers , also with Machito and Gerry Mulligan (1985); afterwards Mossman was lead trumpeter in Toshiko Akiyoshi's Jazz Orchestra and was a member of Horace Silver's band from 1989 to 1991 . From 1989 to 1991 he recorded with The George Gruntz Concert Jazz Band . In 1992 he played in Gerry Mulligan's Rebirth of the Cool Band; he also toured with Dizzy Gillespie's United Nation Orchestra and the Slide Hampton Jazz Masters Orchestra . He also played in Latin jazz bands with Michel Camilo , Mario Bauzá and Eddie Palmieri, as well as with Gil Evans , Pat Metheny , Benny Carter , Bob Mintzer , Al DiMeola , Joe Henderson , Renee Rosnes , Dwayne Dolphin and Jimmy Heath .

Mossman was co-leader with Daniel Schnyder in a band that made recordings for the Red label . In 1993 he led a recording session with Perico Sambeat . In 1994 he had a band made up of David Sánchez , Kenny Drew Jr. , James Genus and Marvin Smitty Smith , with whom he recorded the album Springdance for Claves . In 2001 he recorded The Orisha Suite . a. Paquito D'Rivera , Ray Barretto and Carlos 'Patato' Valdez . At the end of 2012, his arrangement of the Afro-Cuban Jazz Suite for Ellington (for the Bobby Sanabria Big Band) was nominated for the Grammy Award in the Best Instrumental Arrangement category. He has also written for numerous European radio big bands.

Mossman was u. a. at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Oberlin , Ohio , Rutgers University , the New School for Social Research, and the New Jersey Summer Arts Institute . Mossman is currently Professor and Director of Jazz Studies at the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College in New York City.
