Marvin Smitty Smith

Marvin "Smitty" Smith , actually Marvin O. Smith Junior (born June 24, 1961 in Waukegan , Illinois ) is an American jazz drummer .

Marvin Smith Junior is the son of the drummer Marvin Smith Senior and started playing drums at the age of three. He had his first lessons from his father, who took him to sessions at the age of eight. At the age of 14 he completed his first own tour with a funk band. Between 1979 and 1981 he studied at Berklee College of Music . During this time he played with Jon Hendricks . He then moved to New York City . There he played regularly with the quintet of Dave Holland , and also in the bands of such diverse musicians as Hank Jones , Frank Wess , Roland Hanna , the Mingus Dynasty , Sting , David Murray , Sheila Jordan , Sonny Rollins , Steve Coleman , Cassandra Wilson or Wynton Marsalis . In addition, Smith presented his own groups, for example on the albums "Keeper of the Drums" (1987) or "Carryin 'On" (1993).

Kevin Eubanks brought him into the band on the popular television show Tonight Show in 1995 .
