Perico Sambeat (* 23. July 1962 in Valencia as Esteve Pedro Sambeat ) is a Spanish jazz musician ( alto saxophone ).

Live and act

Sambeat started learning the piano at the age of six. After studying classical flute in Barcelona , which he began at the age of 18, he attended the “Taller de Músics” jazz school. He taught himself to play the saxophone from around 1980 onwards. In the mid-1980s he first played in a trio with bassist Javier Colina and drummer Jorge Rossy , and in 1989 with Tete Montoliu . His debut album was released in 1990 ("Perico Sambeat", EGT), followed in 1991 by "Punto de Partida" (EGT) in a quintet with pianist Tete Montoliu and trumpeter Wallace Roney . In 1991 he went to New York, where he a. a. played with Joe Chambers and Jimmy Cobb and took lessons from Joe Lovano and Lee Konitz . Back in Europe, he recorded with Dave Kikoski and Michael Mossman ; then he worked with Bruce Barth . Since then he has performed with his own groups (in a trio with Colina and Marc Miralta , but also in a quartet, quintet and sextet) and as a sideman, for example with Lluís Vidal . He worked u. a. with pianists Brad Mehldau ("NY Barcelona Crossing" 1993, Fresh Sound) and José Reinoso ("Candombe Influenciado" 2004), with bassist Mario Rossy and drummer Jorge Rossy ("Ademuz" 1995, Fresh Sound) with Mark Turner ( "Friendship" 2003, ACT) with Kurt Rosenwinkel , Pat Metheny , Bruce Barth, Daniel Humair , Steve Lacy , Louie Bellson , Michael Brecker , Fred Hersch , Bob Mintzer , Carlos Barretto and Maria Schneider . In 2008 he founded the Flamenco Big Band , with which he presented an album of the same name.

In addition to numerous Spanish prizes, he received the Bird Award at the North Sea Jazz Festival in 2003 .
