Javier Colina

Javier Colina (born October 31, 1960 in Pamplona ) is a Spanish double bass player who works in the field of jazz and world music , especially in flamenco nuevo . He is considered one of the best bass players in Spain.

Live and act

Colina first learned the piano and accordion and occupied herself with the guitar before he turned to the double bass as an autodidact . In the mid-1980s he first played jazz in a trio with Perico Sambeat and Jorge Rossy ; In the early 1990s he formed, together with the drummer Guillermo McGuill, the trio of the pianist Chano Domínguez , who turned to flamenco jazz and performed at many festivals. He also worked with jazz musicians such as George Cables , Hank Jones , Barry Harris , John Hicks , Louie Bellson , Gary Bartz , Jimmy Owens , Frank Lacy , Idris Muhammad , George Benson , Dizzy Gillespie , Chucho Valdés , Jerry González and Jorge Pardo ; In 1999 he recorded a duo album with the Catalan pianist Tete Montoliu . He also worked with flamenco musicians such as Tomatito , El Bola, Pepe Habichuela , Diego El Cigala and Enrique Morente . He also accompanied Cuban musicians such as Compay Segundo , Pancho Amat and Bebo Valdés , with whom he recorded two albums. He also worked with Giovanni Hidalgo , Pat Metheny , Michel Camilo , Radio Tarifa and Toumani Diabaté . He has won numerous awards in recognition of his work. On his debut album Si te contara Jazz with Cuban sounds. With the Colina Miralta Sambeat CMS Trio he has released several albums with great success, most recently Danza Guaná (2015). In 2010 he released an album with the harmonica player Antonio Serrano . With his trio he accompanied the Catalan singer Silvia Pérez Cruz on the album En la imaginación (2011).
