Jorge Pardo (born December 1, 1956 in Madrid ) is a Spanish saxophonist and flutist of flamenco jazz .

Live and act

Pardo studied from the age of fourteen at the Royal Conservatory in Madrid and soon became interested in jazz , which he played in a student band. After performing with numerous professional musicians, he formed the group Dolores with Pedro Ruy Blas. Then he performed with the flamenco musician Camarón (also with Jeff Beck and Stanley Clarke ). Since 1978 he played Nuevo Flamenco for several years in the Sextet of Paco de Lucía , with whom he toured worldwide; he belonged to the band of Carles Benavent (next to Tino di Geraldo , Joan Albert Amargós , Gil Goldstein , Rubem Dantas and Othello Molineaux ). In 1989 he performed with the group Flamenco Fusion in the Cologne Philharmonic . He also worked several times on projects with the WDR Big Band Cologne , with which he recorded the albums Jazzpaña (1992, with Vince Mendoza ; German Jazz Award ) and Jazzpaña II (2000, with Gerardo Núñez and Chano Domínguez ). With his own group he could be heard at the Montreux Jazz Festival as well as in New York City . He made a name for himself u. a. also through new arrangements of jazz classics such as Charlie Parker's Donna Lee or Duke Ellington's Caravan

With Carles Benavent and Tino di Geraldo he recorded the live album Concierto de Sevilla in 1999 , which was later followed by Sin precedentes . At least the album Vientos Flamencos (2005) made him one of the stars of flamenco jazz. In 2004 he went on tour with Chick Corea . In 2012 , Pardo was awarded the Prix ​​du musicien européen by the French Académie du Jazz for his life's work .
