Chano Domínguez (born March 29, 1960 in Cádiz ; actually Sebastían Domínguez Lozano ) is a Spanish jazz pianist . He is one of the founders of flamenco jazz .

Live and act

Domínguez, whose father was a flamenco lover , learned to play the flamenco guitar by himself from the age of eight, and later also the organ and the piano; he also sang in the church choir. In 1978 he founded the band CAI , with which he became one of the leading representatives of rock andaluz . After the band broke up in 1981, he devoted himself entirely to playing the piano and jazz music; he took part in festivals and toured Germany and Belgium with the Trio Hiscádix (whose musicians all came from Cádiz). In 1992 he founded his own trio, which combined the rhythm of flamenco with the musical forms of jazz in his music.

Domínguez worked a. a. with Enrique Morente , Estrella Morente , Michel Camilo , Martirio , Marta Valdés , Gonzalo Rubalcaba , Ana Belén , Jorge Pardo , Carles Benavent , Pepe de Lucía , Niño Josele and Morenito de Illora . At the Jazz Baltica Festival 2005 he performed with Jack DeJohnette , Blas Córdoba, Jerome Harris and Luisito Quintero . He was involved in several projects of the WDR Big Band Cologne (most recently in 2011, when the album Soleando was released in 2015 ).

The native Andalusian has lived and worked in the USA for a long time, initially in Seattle and currently in New York City .

Prizes and awards

In 1992 he won the Spanish jazz competition as a young talent. At the end of 2012, his album Flamenco Sketches ( Blue Note Records ) was nominated for a Grammy Award in the category Best Latin Jazz Album .
