Jerome Harris (born April 5, 1953 in Flushing , New York City ) is an American jazz bassist and guitarist.

Live and act

As a child, Harris first played the accordion and later the violin in a school orchestra. In addition, he learned to play guitar and bass guitar by himself. During his psychology and social science studies at Harvard University , which he graduated in 1972, he played in various jazz bands, including a. with the drummer Akira Tana . He then studied jazz guitar at the New England Conservatory of Music until 1977 .

In 1978 he worked on the album Do not Stop the Carnival of Sonny Rollins with, with whom he worked on together during the 1980s. Between 1988 and 1992 he took part in five CD recordings as a guitarist in his band. He continued in the 1980s a. a. with Oliver Lake , Bill Frisell , Bob Moses , Jack DeJohnette , Ray Anderson , Don Byron , Bobby Previte , Amina Claudine Myers , Bob Stewart , George Russell , Julius Hemphill and Marty Ehrlich . In 1986 he released his first own album Algorithms .

In addition to international tours with Rollins (including Japan), Harris has performed with saxophonist Sam Newsome and guitarist Marvin Sewell, as well as with Oliver Lakes Band Jump Up in Africa, India and Southeast Asia with flautist Jamie Baum and guitarist Kenny Wessel and in the Middle East with the vibraphonist Jay Hoggard .

At the concert Joni's Jazz in honor of Joni Mitchell Harris worked as arranger, guitarist and assistant to the director Vernon Reid and performed a. a. with Chaka Khan , Jane Siberry , Duncan Sheik and PM Dawn . He also worked as a film musician, appeared in the Broadway musical Kat and the Kings and teaches history and social context of jazz and blues at Hampshire College in Amherst. In 2018 he was a member of Marty Ehrlich's quartet Philosophy of a Groove (with James Weidman and Ben Perowsky ).
