Duncan Sheik (born November 18, 1969 in Montclair , New Jersey ) is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist.

life and career

Duncan Sheik received piano lessons as a child from his grandmother, a graduate of the Juilliard School of Music . During his high school years he played guitar in various bands and while studying at Brown University he performed with Lisa Loeb . He then worked as a studio musician and worked on an album by the group His Boy Elroy in 1993 .

In 1996 Sheik released his debut album. In 1998 he was nominated for a Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance (which Elton John received for Candle In The Wind ). In 2000 he composed Phantom Moon based on poems by Steven Sater . In 2003 he wrote the musical Spring Awakening with Sater . For this he received two Tony Awards ( Best Original Music and Best Orchestration ) in 2007 and a Grammy Award in 2008 . He also composed several film scores.
