Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Cole Porter Song Book is a 1956 published Jazz - album of Ella Fitzgerald with songs by Cole Porter .

background

It was Ella Fitzgerald's first album for the label Verve Records, newly founded by Norman Granz . The recordings were made in February and March 1956 in the Capitol Studios in Hollywood . Buddy Bregman arranged the tracks and conducted the studio orchestra.

The album opened the Songbook series of a total of eight albums with songs by various composers, which are collectively known as the Great American Songbook and earned Fitzgerald the title First Lady of Song .

Norman Granz, who was Fitzgerald's manager and producer of many of her albums, visited Cole Porter at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel and played him the entire album. Porter just said: My, what marvelous diction that girl has . By choosing Cole Porter as the entry into the Songbook series, audiences became aware of both Porter as a source of great music and Ella Fitzgerald's inexhaustible vocal resources.

The album was inscribed in 2003 as one of 50 albums on the National Library of Congress Recordings Register , a list of recordings of cultural, historical, or aesthetic value and ties to the United States.
