Walter Joseph "Pete" Candoli (born June 28, 1923 in Mishawaka , Indiana , † January 11, 2008 in Studio City , California) was an American jazz trumpeter and arranger of swing and cool jazz .

Life

Candoli learned bass and horn before switching to the trumpet. In the 1940s he played in various big bands such as Sonny Dunham (1941), Benny Goodman , Ray McKinley in 1942, Tommy Dorsey from 1943 to 1944 and Charlie Barnet . Candoli is best known from his time in the Big Band ( First Herd ) of Woody Herman from 1944 to 1946 , where he became known as a soloist for his skills in playing in the high registers, and for eccentric appearances in Superman costume, which is why he was nicknamed "Superman with a Horn". He also played first trumpet in the recording of Igor Stravinsky’s “Ebony Concerto” , which the latter wrote for the Woody Herman Orchestra. Then he played in 1947/48 in the Glenn Miller successor band to Tex Beneke and later - after a career break caused by a lip injury - mainly as a studio musician on the west coast, where he also worked with musicians of " West Coast Jazz " such as Shorty Rogers , Gerry Mulligan and Art Pepper . He also appeared with Les Brown , Woody Herman and Stan Kenton and played and arranged with singers such as Peggy Lee ( Black Coffee , 1953), Ella Fitzgerald and Judy Garland . He also accompanied Frank Sinatra .

From 1953 to 1958 Candoli was married to the film actress Vicky Lane , with whom he had a daughter. In 1954/55 he had his own combo. From 1957 to 1962 he and his brother Conte Candoli had their own band, which was also accompanied by the singer Betty Hutton , with whom he was married from 1960 to 1967. With his combo he starred in the romantic comedy My Bride is Paranormal ( Bell Book and Candle ) (directed by Richard Quine 1958), the melodrama Rival ( Kings Go Forth ) (directed by Delmer Daves , leading roles: Frank Sinatra, Tony Curtis , Natalie Wood , 1958) and the Gene Krupa Story (directed by Don Weis 1959); he occasionally appeared in the Peter Gunn crime series (1959, he can also be heard on the Peter Gunn albums by Henry Mancini ) and later also worked as an extra . With his third wife, singer Edie Adams , he toured the nightclubs in the 1970s, where he not only played the trumpet and conducted the orchestra, but also sang.

Candoli can be heard as a sideman on numerous recordings. He gave seminars at several universities.

Appreciation

Pete Candoli was the older brother of the jazz trumpeter Conte Candoli , who learned to play the trumpet from him, whose big band career he gave the first impetus and with whom he worked frequently. In 1997, he and his brother were inducted into the International Jazz Hall of Fame.
