Black Coffee is a jazz album by Peggy Lee that was recorded in April 1953 and released by Decca Records that same year .
Creation of the album
In 1952, Peggy Lee wanted to record the song Lover on her previous label Capitol Records , but the manager did not allow this because the piece was already a hit with Les Paul . So Lee moved to Decca, where she stayed under contract for the next five years and recorded a number of excellent albums, including Black Coffee .
The album was initially recorded in 1953 on a 10-inch LP with eight tracks, but was re-released in 1956 in the then prevailing 12- inch format with an additional four tracks recorded in 1956. These 12 tracks are also available on the CD available today. The original tapes were used to produce the CD.
The album was recorded in two sessions in New York and Los Angeles and is considered to be one of the first concept albums in jazz.
Lee's erotic singing and typical bar jazz style contributed to the album's success. By his own admission, Black Coffee was Lee's favorite album.
Impact history
BBC listeners voted the album in 96th place in a poll for “The Top 100 Jazz Albums” in the 1990s.
