Edie Adams (born April 16, 1927 in Kingston , Pennsylvania as Elizabeth Edith Enke , † October 15, 2008 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American singer , film , television and stage actress .

Private life

Edie Adams was born Elizabeth Edith Enke in Kingston, Pennsylvania. She was married to Ernie Kovacs from 1954 to 1962 , with whom she had a daughter. After his death, she had to pay his tax debts, which made Adam's financial situation very difficult and she could only repay the debts with the support of prominent friends. From 1964 to 1971 she was married to the photographer Marty Mills and from 1972 to 1989 with the jazz trumpeter Pete Candoli . The actress was suffering from cancer and died at the age of 81 years at a pneumonia . She left behind her son Josh Mills .

Career

Edie Adams graduated from Columbia School of Drama and then trained at Juilliard School . Her acting career began in the 1950s as an actress in television films. Together with Ernie Kovacs, she stood in front of the camera for his television series from 1952. She later got roles in movies and was a popular supporting actress, especially in the 1960s. She is best known to the cinema audience for two supporting roles. In Billy Wilder's film The Apartment (1960) she played the role of secretary Miss Olsen , and in Delbert Mann's A Pajamas for Two (1961) she won over audiences as the naive Rebel Davis . Adams primarily served the stereotype of the charming singer and the blonde sex bomb with her roles. However, her main field of activity remained television, in which she made numerous guest appearances in a wide variety of series. From 1962 to 1963 she hosted her own television show, the Edie Adams Show . For a long time she was the face of a commercial for Muriel Cigars , for which she is still in the minds of viewers today.

In addition to her work in front of the camera, Edie Adams was also on stage. She successfully played the role of Daisy Mae on Broadway in 1957 in the theater adaptation of the comic strip Li'l Abner and was awarded a Tony Award for it.

In the 1970s she often appeared on stage with her then-husband Pete Candoli and sang in numerous nightclubs.
