Hans Peter Althaus

Hans Peter Althaus (born March 6, 1939 in Siegen ) is a German linguist and professor emeritus .

Life

After graduating from high school in Kassel in 1957 , Hans Peter Althaus studied German , Nordic and political science at the Philipps University in Marburg from 1959 to 1966 . 1966 doctorate he with a thesis on language and edition problems of Jewish folk literature of the late Middle Ages to Dr. phil. Until 1971 he was Ludwig Erich Schmitt's assistant at the German Language Atlas Research Center in Marburg. Subsequently, he was full professor for German linguistics at the University of Trier until his retirement . There he also taught German as a foreign language and Yiddish studies .

In 1987 and 1990 Althaus was visiting professor at Wuhan University and in 1993 at the Wuhan Music Academy in Wuhan (China). Since 1990 he has been an honorary professor at the Foreign Language Faculty of Wuhan University.

Research priorities

Hans Peter Althaus is an expert in the field of Yiddish vocabulary in German. The influence of Chinese on German is also one of his areas of research. Other main research areas of Althaus are the history of the German art song as well as general art and cultural history.

He has also made numerous research contributions in the fields of sociolinguistics and dialectology .

As co-editor of at Niemeyer published Dictionary of German Linguistics he worked the fields Graphetik , Graphemik , orthography / orthoepy .
