Ludwig Erich Schmitt

Ludwig Erich Schmitt (born February 10, 1908 in Remscheid , died March 1, 1994 in Marburg ) was a German specialist in German studies and a university professor.

Life

Schmitt studied German philology at the universities of Giessen , Berlin and Leipzig . He received his doctorate in 1934 and completed his habilitation in Leipzig in 1941; his teacher was Theodor Frings . From 1941 to 1943 Schmitt was professor at the University of Groningen , after 1945 in Leipzig. In 1953 he left the GDR and took on teaching assignments in Gießen and Cologne in West Germany . From 1956 until his retirement in 1976 he was a full professor at the Philipps University in Marburg and, as the successor to Walther Mitzka, head of the “Deutscher Sprachatlas” institute, which he expanded into a large research institute. He supervised 90 dissertations and 16 habilitations; In the 1980s, professors who had been his students taught at many universities. B.
