Peter von Polenz

Peter von Polenz (born March 1, 1928 in Bautzen ; † August 24, 2011 in Korlingen ) was a German linguist and Germanic Medievalist .

Life

Peter von Polenz comes from the Saxon noble family Polenz . He is a grandson of Wilhelm von Polenz .

After studying German with Theodor Frings and Ludwig Erich Schmitt with a doctorate at the University of Leipzig , he was initially a research assistant there until 1952. After his dismissal and the ban on him from doing academic work, he fled to the FRG.

He initially worked at the University of Marburg , where he completed his habilitation in 1959 . In 1961 he became a professor at the University of Heidelberg , where he was appointed to a full professorship for German philology and linguistics in 1964. From 1975 until his retirement in 1993 he taught as professor for German linguistics at the University of Trier .

Polenz has made important contributions to the history of the German language and to language change .

In 1992 he became a corresponding member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences in Leipzig.

2000: German Language Prize from the Henning Kaufmann Foundation to maintain the purity of the German language
2003: Honorary doctorate from the University of Leipzig
