Horst Haider Munske

Horst Haider Munske (born May 5, 1935 in Görlitz ) is a German linguist and university professor. He is Professor Emeritus for Germanic and German Linguistics and Dialect Studies and Senior Fellow of Linguistics at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg .

life and work

School and study

Horst Haider Munske attended the Carl-Duisberg-Gymnasium in Wuppertal -Barmen, where he graduated from high school in 1955. In 1955 he began studying German and Classical Philology (Graecum 1956) at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn , continued in 1956 at the Free University of Berlin in the subjects of German, English and Nordic studies and moved to the Philipps University in Marburg in 1957 . From 1957 to 1962 he worked as a student assistant with Walther Mitzka on the Silesian Dictionary of the German Research Foundation and with Ludwig Erich Schmitt on the German Language Atlas .

Doctorate, habilitation and professorship in Marburg

In Marburg Munske received his doctorate in 1962 with a dissertation on the suffix * -inga / unga in the Germanic languages in the subjects of German studies, Nordic studies and Celtology. From 1962 to 1963 he was a research associate at the German Language Atlas. He then taught until 1965 as a lecturer for German language and literature at Uppsala University in Sweden. From 1965 to 1969 he received a post-doctoral scholarship from the German Research Foundation. He completed his habilitation in 1970 with a thesis on Germanic legal vocabulary in the area of misdeeds and was appointed lecturer in 1970 and in 1971 professor for Germanic and Nordic philology at the University of Marburg. From 1972 to 1973 he was Dean of the Department of General and German Linguistics and Philology.

Professorship in Erlangen

In 1975 Munske was appointed to the chair for 'Germanic and German Linguistics and Dialectology' at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg . There he devoted himself to the establishment of a new course in the master's subject 'German Linguistics' and the subject 'German' for teaching at grammar schools and expanded the range of the chair to include professorships in 'German as a foreign language', 'Nordic philology' and 'computational linguistics'. From 1982 to 1986 he was Vice Dean and Dean of the Philosophical Faculty II (Linguistics and Literature Studies) and represented the Faculty as Senator until 1992. From 1988 to 1996 he was a reviewer for the German Research Foundation in the subject of German linguistics and from 1990 to 2002 he was a liaison professor of the German Research Foundation at his university. In 2002 he founded the 'Interdisciplinary Center for Dialect Research' (IZD) at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and was its board spokesman until 2007. In 2008 he founded the association 'Alumni Germanistik Erlangen eV'

Research priorities

Munskes scientific work applies on the one hand to the traditional breadth of the subject from the old Germanic languages to dialectology, on the other hand they open up newer methods of language contact research, written linguistics, lexicology and word formation. The following subject areas shaped his teaching and research activities in Erlangen to a particular degree: dialect research, lexicology and word formation, orthography reform, language contact research and Frisian. In addition, many contributions were made to university policy.

Dialect research

Building on his experience with the Marburg Language Atlas and the pioneering work of his predecessor Ernst Schwarz , Munske and several Bavarian colleagues founded the major project 'Bavarian Language Atlas' in 1987, which was funded long-term by the German Research Foundation and the Free State of Bavaria. He took over the management of the sub-project 'Language Atlas of Middle Franconia' and concluded it with eight maps and commentary volumes (2000 to 2014) as well as a documentary manual (2013). A hallmark of this regional atlas is the combination of language map and detailed comments. Alfred Klepsch's (* 1954) habilitation thesis on Yiddish in Middle Franconia emerged from the dialect surveys. A final characteristic of the now more than 50-volume Bavarian Language Atlas was published in 2015.

Lexicology and word formation

The Germanic word formation was Munskes dissertation. In Erlangen he started two projects of the German Research Foundation on early New High German and Middle High German word formation, which were completed with five dissertations and a conference volume on the historical word formation of German (2002). The special feature of both projects is the strict corpus reference and the text-related semantic analysis of all documented word formations. A recent project, funded by the Fritz Thyssen Foundation since 2018 , which is dedicated to 'Productivity and Creativity in the Lexic of East Franconian', builds on these experiences . Above all, the word formation of the dialect vocabulary documented in the Franconian dictionary is examined.

Orthography reform

A coincidence led Munske to join the group of orthography reformers. When the Institute for German Language was officially commissioned to work out proposals for the revision of German spelling, there was no specialist in foreign vocabulary. Munske had published on this and was also an avid supporter of a spelling reform. He became an active member of the relevant working committees for over 10 years. He participated in the reform proposals of 1989, 1992 and the final regulation of 1995. However, over the years, with increasing familiarization with the complex field of spelling, his attitude changed from being a reform enthusiast to a critic who advocated the preservation of the special structures of German orthography. As the only member of the commissions, he voted against the lower case. In numerous books, articles and journalistic contributions from 1997 to 2006 he justified his position and, now hand in hand with critics from schools, universities, literature and journalism, fought against an imposed, incorrect and useless spelling reform. In 1997 he left the 'Council for German Spelling' in protest. After his retirement he wrote a "In Praise of Spelling" (2005), which was translated into Korean in 2008. 20 years after the spelling reform, he wrote a "Declaration of the Spelling Reform" (2018) for the French magazine Cahiers de lexicologie .

Language contact research

Munskes preoccupation with language contact began with the article "Germanic languages and total German language" in the Lexicon of German Linguistics (1973), was continued by articles such as "Is German a mixed language?" (1995) and the overview "Foreign words in the history of German language. Integration or stigmatization?" (2001). It found expression in the anthologies Eurolatein - the Greek and Latin heritage in European languages (1996) and German in contact with Germanic languages (2004). Ultimately, his interest in Germanic languages led him to language contact and this to orthography. His inaugural lecture in Erlangen (1976) was on "Colloquial language as a phenomenon of language contact", and his farewell lecture (2003) on the topic of "English in German".

Hairdressing

Munske's habilitation thesis led him to the extensive old Frisian legal sources, which had not yet been explored in terms of linguistic history. This led him to take a critical look at the situation of hairdressing in the article "Die Frisistik - ein Mauerflümchen der Germanischen Sprachwissenschaft" (1979). At a symposium on the island of Föhr (1994), he recommended a handbook for the small, marginalized subject, which should comprehensively represent the state of research of the last 100 years, but also provide identification to the Frisians in North, East and West Frisia. The idea was picked up by a group of young hairdressers from the three Friesland regions and, with the support of the private Ferring Foundation and the German Research Foundation, led to the Handbuch des Frisian / Handbook of Frisian Studies (2001) with 79 articles by 46 authors. Munske dealt with the old Frisian word formation.

University policy

Munske has commented on current developments at the university several times, most recently with the publication Our University in Descent? Bologna, Bafög, Bachelor. Observations and Advice (2014). He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the German Language Association (VDS).

Munske supervised forty-five dissertations and eight habilitation theses from 1984 to 2012. Memberships

From 1972 to 2002 Munske was a board member of the Philosophical Faculty Day . He has been (since 1980) a member of the Commission for Bavarian State History at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and (since 1978) a member of the Fryske Akademy in Leeuwarden . From 1986 to 1996 he was a member of the “Commission for Spelling Issues” of the Institute for German Language (Mannheim) and the International Working Group for Orthography as well as (1997) the intergovernmental “Commission for German Spelling”.

Private life

Munske is married, has three sons with his wife Barbara Munske and lives in Erlangen.
