Sabine Schiffer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sabine Schiffer (* 1966 in Geilenkirchen ) is a German linguist and media educator . She teaches at the University for Media, Communication and Economics in Frankfurt am Main. Her topics are media theory , media criticism and media journalism . She deals, among other things, with the image of Islam in the German media and " hate speech " (roughly translated: "hate speech") in anti-Islamic blogs .

Education and professional activities

Sabine Schiffer grew up in North Rhine-Westphalia and Bavaria . After graduating from high school , she studied linguistics at the Friedrich-Alexander University in Erlangen , where she later also completed a four-semester second degree in economics , politics and Islamic studies. She has been working as a media educator since 1993 and deals primarily with discrimination in public discourse, in particular on topics such as anti-Semitism , Islamophobia, sexism as well as the media and war. The main focus is on the web activities related to this topic . In 2004 she received a doctorate from Horst Haider Munske at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg with a thesis on the representation of Islam in daily newspapers and magazines. phil. PhD . Until 2006 she worked as a lecturer in German linguistics at Erlangen University.

In November 2005, Schiffer founded the Institute for Media Responsibility (IMV) in Erlangen, which she still heads today. Since 2009 the IMV has been operating as a limited liability company (UG) with Schiffer as managing director. The IMV has been organizing a media education week every year since 2006 . From 2006 to 2009 Schiffer was a member of the media working group of the German Islam Conference . Since 2009 she has been writing regularly for the Turkish daily Zaman . Since 2012 Schiffer has worked as a consultant for the journalism school World Media Akademie in Offenbach am Main , and since the winter semester 2012 as a freelance lecturer for the International Media Studies course at DW Akademie in Bonn . Since the summer semester 2018, she has been a professor at the University of Media, Communication and Economics in Frankfurt / Main .

Publications and reception

Sabine Schiffer dealt with the presentation of Islam in the press in her interdisciplinary dissertation from 2004. In the main part of her investigation, she analyzed images and texts from national daily and weekly newspapers (including Focus , Der Spiegel , Die Zeit , FAZ ) from 1988 to 2002. Schiffer identified systematic manipulations throughout the material. So were u. a. Film techniques, such as the frequency and repetition of certain stimulus combinations, are analyzed as manipulative means for stereotyping . In her dissertation, she suggested comparing the lines of development of the anti-Semitic and the Islamophobic discourse. Kristina Stock from the Orientalist Institute of the University of Leipzig rated this study in the specialist forum Humanities - Social and Cultural History as serious media criticism that reveals mechanisms of manipulation, the results of which are relativized by counterexamples that do not follow the presentation techniques found, but without reducing the value of the dissertation . Stock pointed out that, according to Schiffer, the integration discussion that is being carried out with regard to Muslim fellow citizens threatens to end in the same accusation of misrepresentation as happened to Jewish fellow citizens at the beginning of the 20th century.

Schiffer took part with a work under the title Islam in German Media in a 2005 special edition on Muslims in Europe in the supplement From Politics and Contemporary History of the weekly newspaper Das Parlament .

In December 2008 she took part in the conference Feindbild Muslim - Feindbild Jude of the Center for Research on Antisemitism , chaired by Wolfgang Benz , and wrote a contribution to the book documentation of the conference.

In the same year she published the book Antisemitismus und Islamophobie together with Constantin Wagner, a freelancer at her institute . A comparison . She explores the question of "whether there is an Islamophobia about which something can be learned in historical comparison with anti-Semitism". Patrick Bahners praised the book in a collective review in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) as a stimulus for an "urgently needed 'ideological critique of the critique of Islam" ". In contrast, the journalist Sabine Pamperrien in Das Parlament assessed the book as a "counterpart to the pseudo-scientific propaganda of the critics of Islam". She held up unscientific working methods to the authors Schiffer and Wagner. Armin Pfahl-Traughber also criticized analytical weaknesses in a review written for the Humanist Press Service . The authors would "often only list descriptions and comments without clear systematization". It is also annoying that there is no differentiation between criticism of Islam and Islamophobia. So “feminists, Christian fundamentalists, humanists” would be lumped together.

About Schiffer's contribution to the anthology Islamfeindlichkeit , which was published by Thorsten Gerald Schneiders in 2009 , Bahners wrote in his review in the FAZ that Sabine Schiffer was rightly concerned “in detail with the adversities of the blogger scene critical of Islam. Pages like ' Politically Incorrect ' [...] [stand] for brutalizing and disinhibiting public speech, which is unprecedented “. However, he criticized Schiffer's demand that “only non-religious causes should be taken into account in the causal consideration of women's oppression”. Schiffer writes regularly as a columnist for the online news site Deutsch-Türkisches Journal (DTJ).

The political scientist Floris Biskamp criticized Schiffer in Jungle World as an author who “likes to label criticism of certain currents of Islam as agitation”, as a representative of a movement that has “for some years in prejudice against Islam the new anti-Semitism and in critics of Islam the new Nazis ”. In particular, their demand for a restriction of freedom of expression is "piquant". You find yourself in a "half-world between prejudice research and pro-Islamist lobby".

She is criticized for certain contacts, interlocutors and platforms. For example, she gave an interview to the Iranian foreign broadcaster Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting and was, among other things, several times a guest on programs by the conspiracy theorist Ken Jebsen . In various articles, she also represented conspiracy theories as of September 11, 2001 .

Jan-Philipp Hein described the Institute for Media Responsibility in the Kölner Stadtanzeiger as a "one-woman institute", since Schiffer only lists freelancers apart from one office worker and, according to his own statements, operates the institute "essentially" as "a network".

Controversy on the Marwa El-Sherbini murder

In 2009 Sabine Schiffer commented several times on the circumstances and background to the murder of Marwa El-Sherbini on July 1, 2009 by the Islamophobic and xenophobic accused during a court hearing in Dresden. She gave several interviews on the case, for example in July 2009 in the word radio SWR cont.ra , in the taz and in the Arab news channel Al Jazeera .

The murdered man's husband rushed to her aid and was critically injured by the defendant with several knife stabs. In addition, an incoming police officer shot him specifically because he mistakenly believed him to be the perpetrator of the knife attack. In a telephone interview that was broadcast on July 15, 2009 by the German-language radio Islam of the Iranian state news broadcaster IRIB , Schiffer stated that the husband was "certainly also shot by a police officer for racist reasons". Thereupon, after reports by the police officer and his department, a penalty order was issued against Schiffer for defamation , which she contradicted. The Erlangen District Court acquitted her because it judged her comment to be covered by the fundamental right to freedom of expression . On October 13, 2010, the judgment became final.

In 2011 Schiffer's contribution to the anthology Tödliche Realitäten appeared. The racist murder of Marwa El-Sherbini . He also commemorates eleven other victims of right-wing extremist violence in the Federal Republic of Germany who were killed in Saxony . Using the term “Islamophobia”, Schiffer dealt with the tension between criticism of Islam and anti-Muslim resentment. The political scientist Floris Biskamp criticized her analysis in another article in the anthology.

In an article in Inamo magazine in 2011, Schiffer argued, among other things, "that the anti-Islamic murder of Marwa El-Sherbini was not just an isolated act by a single perpetrator", but "must be understood in the context of widespread anti-Islamic sentiments". This is still not discussed enough, although studies have shown growing anti-Islamic resentment.
